Lost a Battle, but not the War
"How did I end up carrying this damn thing anyway?" Inuyasha grumbled as he shifted the box higher up on his shoulder. "It's not like it's even mine."
"Because my backpack is already full," Kagome reminded him. She jostled the straps of her big yellow bag causing it to bounce.
"We should have just left it there," Inuyasha stubbornly insisted.
"That would have been rude," Kagome countered primly.
Inuyasha grunted, sending a sideways glance at the miko walking beside him. Two weeks ago a messenger from some minor lord had entered Kaede's village searching for help to vanquish a youkai plaguing their town. As soon as the messenger mentioned unnatural strength for a youkai of its caliber, Inuyasha declared they would investigate it possibly having a jewel shard. The next morning Inuyasha and Kagome had set out alone with many cries of protest from Shippou, and knowing looks from Miroku.
When they arrived at the castle, the lord was immediately taken with Kagome, declaring her the most beautiful maiden in the land. They were given elaborate rooms for their stay. Upon their departure, and defeat of the youkai, the lord gifted Kagome with a costly kimono made from the silk of a spider youkai.
"It's just a piece of cloth. I don't see what the fuss is about."
Kagome smiled and declared, "I think you're just jealous."
Snorting emphatically in response about being concerned over a human, Inuyasha was curious when Kagome sidled closer to him.
"It feels really nice," Kagome said, brushing her arm against his, looking up at him through thick bangs.
Inuyasha coughed lightly. "That so?"
"Maybe I'll let you feel how nice when I wear it tonight."
He idly wondered if she would mind him using his claws to permanently unwrap her from the blasted thing.
