"I can call into work, or get a sub. You shouldn't be home alone."
"Mary Margaret, I'm thirty years old. I can stay home sick by myself, I have done it many times." My overprotective Mom's face fell, and I immediately regret my choice of words. I didn't need her to feel anymore guilty than she already does. "I don't mean…. I just mean…" I tried to correct my mistake, but was unable to find a good excuse. She cut me off with a wave of her hand, saving me from making something up.
"No, you're right. You can take care of yourself. The time I should have been here for you has passed." Mary Margaret said walking into the kitchen, and filling a tall glass with water. "Keep this down, and I'll leave."
I took the glass drinking the content as quickly as I dared. Mary Margaret then proceeded to watch me for fifteen minutes, until she seemed satisfied.
"All right, fine. Call me if you need me, okay?"
"I will." I lied seamlessly.
"No, you won't." she replied with a slight smile. "See you at 3:30"
I watched and waited for the teacher to close the front door behind her before running to the bathroom.
It had been several hours and I had not yet been able to leave the bathroom. I slid across the floor, placing my head against the cool surface of the tub. I curled my knees to my chest and started to cry. Unable to convince myself of a better way to get around it, I pulled out my cellphone. I quickly dialed my Mom's number who answered after the second ring.
"Emma, are you okay? What happened?"
"Mom…. I need you." I managed to get out between sobs.
"I'll be there as soon as I can, hang on." She said hanging up the phone.
Fifteen minutes later she appeared in the door way, muttering a small "oh, Emma" before setting to work. She pulled my hair into a bun, then wet a washcloth placing it on the back of my neck. She sat beside me placing a hand on my back rubbing in circles. I lay my head on her shoulder. "Thanks, Mom." I said falling asleep.
