Everyone on Sodor knows that Diesel 10 is notorious for causing trouble. Most of the engines stayed away from him. However, one day, Diesel 10 was causing confusion and delay in a different manner than he usually did. Gordon, who was waiting for his passengers to board the express at Knapford, noticed that no one was boarding the trains, and everyone was staring at something. That something was Diesel 10, who was sitting on an adjacent track, and having a full on conversation…with his claw.
"Isn't that right, Pinchy? Yes, those stinking steam engines are all horrid. What's that?" Diesel 10 paused as if listening for a reply from the completely inanimate attachment, and then said, "Now, now, we shouldn't be too rash, I know you don't like them. I don't either." There was another pause, and then Diesel 10 said rather loudly, "Pinchy! Watch your language! There's children here."
"Mommy, what's that engine talking to?" a little girl on the platform said.
"I think he's sick, dear," the girl's mother replied.
Soon, the Fat Controller came out of his office upon hearing all the commotion and noticing that none of the trains had left the station, nor had any of the passengers gotten on board. "What is the meaning of this—Diesel 10!" the Fat Controller shouted, finally catching his attention.
Diesel 10 looked around, and noticed that everyone was staring at him. The Fat Controller looked cross, Thomas and Gordon looked utterly bewildered, and the passengers looked both bewildered and concerned.
"What are you doing here?! You are supposed to be at the smelters yard!" the Fat Controller said.
"I um was just—" Diesel 10 started.
"Talking to your claw?" said Thomas.
"Shut up, puffball! I was not talking to my claw, right Pinchy?" Diesel 10 said, looking at his claw.
The Fat Controller face palmed. "Diesel 10, I think you need a shrink!" he said, and Gordon, Thomas, and quite a few of the passengers chuckled.
At that, Diesel 10 left the station, thoroughly embarrassed. The Fat Controller went back into his office, muttering something about finding a shrink that was willing to work with a crazy engine.
"Well, you don't see that every day," Gordon said with a chuckle. Soon, all the passengers were on board, and everything went back to normal. Well, for the most part, anyway.
