Spencer's hands pushed furiously into her eyes as her brown hair flowed over her hands and obscured her face from the view of the other girl. "Spenceā¦" Aria murmured. She stepped forward lovingly expecting (or maybe just hoping for) tears or apologies, but when Spencer snapped her head up and glared at her with eyes full of anger and hatred she couldn't help but stumble backwards.
"Just get away from me. GO!" The venomous words spewed from Spencer's mouth, but not her heart. The scared look on Aria's face before she ran out the bathroom door broke Spencer's heart more than Aria would ever know. They were team Sparia, but they couldn't be. Not now. As much as it hurt her push her best friends away, it would destroy her if anything happened to them because of her. It was better this way.
Spencer breathed in and out, deeper and deeper, slowing her breath until she felt calm enough to stand. Ever since finding out about Toby, she hadn't gotten a full night's sleep and she could tell it was beginning to take a toll on her. She was used to walking around with purpose. In all honesty she knew that before she didn't walk anywhere, she strode. Now, the effort it took to put one foot in front of the other was almost overwhelming. She looked like she might curl up in the foetal position and burst into tears at any moment. Gathering her thoughts and her things, Spencer left the bathroom and headed towards her locker. She tried to avoid eye contact with everyone but she felt their judging eyes searing her skin.
Spencer dropped her books in her locker, grabbed her key's and slammed her locker shut. She couldn't help but think that the old Spencer would've grabbed more books out of her locker to take home but this new Spencer couldn't even be bothered. She knew that she wasn't going to be doing homework anytime soon. She saw Aria talking with Emily at the end of the hallway and before they could spot her Spencer did an abrupt turn and walked away from them to the side exit of the school.
When Spencer got within view of her car she spotted a red scrap of paper tucked under the windshield wiper and her heart stopped. She looked around like scared prey, but despite a number of students heading to their cars no one stood out as anything more than a local student coming from or going to class. Steeling her nerves she flipped over the paper and exhaled with a chuckle as she saw the bold print and crazy designs of yet another local wannabe band advertising their "gig" at the coffee shop. She crumpled the paper and shoved it to the bottom of her messenger bag and headed home ignoring the fact that she still had three more classes this afternoon.
