Ava walked out of the store and shielded her eyes to the sun, it was only 10:20 in the morning and in Arizona it's already 90 degrees. She sighed uncomfortably before turning and looking over to her twin brother, Aren, his head tilted up as he soaked in the sun. Of course her brother wasn't bothered at all by the deadly rays of the sun, his power comes from it. Hers on the other hand, does not, which is why she couldn't wait for it to go down and for the moon to control the sky. She took out a pamphlet and waved it over her face in hopes of cooling her down as she walked with her brother.
"You know, you're not acting like a usual redhead" Ava commented.
"That's because the usual redhead chooses to stay away from the sun" Aren turned to her, "Kind of like you"
Ava turned, "For good reason, one is that I'll get sunburned until next week"
Aren chuckled, "Glad I don't get that with the moon"
Ava glared at him, "The least you can do is pretend that you're in turmoil like everyone else here in this desert"
"The last place we were in barely had any sunlight" Aren countered, "At least let me enjoy this one for a little bit longer"
"Seattle was a little shit show" Ava agreed, "I forgot how much I missed it not having a cloud in the sky"
"Now you see my point" Aren replied back.
Aren and Ava have been moving around most of their lives, ever since their parents died in a car crash and they went to live with their aunt and uncle. It wasn't long after their parents death did a group of mutant hunters start to try and seek them out. At first it was suitable, only moving around four times a year to remain undetected but now they seem to be picking up the pace. In the last month alone they had to move eight times and turned their rental homes to vacation homes, to hotels.
Aren sighed, "So what do you want to do?"
"Anything that involves being inside" Ava commented.
Ava took out her water and took a long drink from it, not believing that it's already turned from thick ice to full on water. Still, the feeling of it running down her throat almost gave her a breath of fresh air. She watched as her brother scanned the crowd, always looking for someone who seemed out of the ordinary.
Aren nodded, "Yeah, you're right… maybe being inside is for the best"
"Will you stop being so paranoid?" Ava asked, "They always blend in so easily that we never see them coming unless they attack"
Aren turned to her, "And that doesn't scare you? Especially right now?"
"My powers may be strongest at night but at least I can use a force field to protect us" Ava whispered when she took a step closer to her brother.
Ava suddenly felt her phone vibrate as she didn't even move to get it, Aren quickly reached for his and took it out to read. She knew it was only their aunt demanding to know where they were even though she has a locator on their phone.
"Shit"
Ava blinked, "What?"
She didn't even wait as she took out her phone and viewed the message that was from their uncle.
Come back now!
"Aunt Jean is probably driving him up the wall right now" Ava commented, "It's nothing to worry about"
Aren glanced to her as he put his phone down, "Has Uncle Lloyd ever sent anything that made us not worry?"
"Point taken" Ava nodded.
Together they both went back in the direction of their hotel, Ava only thinking that it was nothing to be worried about. It wasn't out of the ordinary that Uncle Lloyd would demand that they come back to the hotel, he's been giving them a strict schedule to follow which seems to change everytime they move. Aren loves to follow and obey his orders, Ava doesn't. Aren has brought up a good point about how their aunt and uncle could've easily let them deal with this the moment they turned 18 and therefore should be grateful that the pair has chosen this dangerous path even though they weren't mutants. Ava suddenly slammed into Aren's back as she went off to the side and looked up at her twin brother.
"What the-"
"Shh!" Aren grabbed her and moved out of the path.
"What?" Ava whispered before looking over.
Aren nodded up the road, "They're here'
"No!" Ava whispered, "We just barely got here a week ago, how did they find us so fast"
Aren shook his head, eyes still glued to the group, "No idea"
"Are Aunt Jean and Uncle Lloyd in there?" Ava glanced back to her brother, "We have to save them"
Aren sighed, "I was afraid this might happen"
"What?" Ava asked, "What are you talking about?"
"We're going to have to split up" Aren said.
Ava turned and looked over to her brother, Aren hadn't even moved, almost like as if he hadn't brought that up. She glanced back to the group crowding around their hotel room, looking almost as if it was a gang sight, no doubt their aunt and uncle were inside. Her blood boiled hotter than the weather around her as she took a step in the hunters direction. Aren quickly grabbed onto her and forced her into the space where the garbage dump was, the smell putrid and burning her nose.
"We have to save them" Ava told her brother.
"There's nothing you can do right now" Aren commented.
Ava blinked, "I can do? Aren, what the hell is going on?"
Aren hesitated before he said, "Uncle Lloyd and I were discussing about what would happen if things got too difficult, where the four of us couldn't reunite in order to move. I'm going to go and try to save them and you're going to run to the next destination"
"No" Ava shook her head, "That's insane, I would never leave you guys"
"I know you wouldn't" Aren said, "But it's the only choice we have"
"We can fight together and take them on" Ava argued, "We've done it a couple of times, we can do it again"
Aren looked out from the corner, "Not with this many people, Ava, they want us together, if we fight together and lose, they will get what they want"
"I can't leave you" Ava choked back tears, "You're my brother, you're all I have left"
Aren smiled, "I know… but my powers are stronger in the day. If you're planning on doing something stupid, at least wait until the full moon"
Ava rubbed her lips together, "But you won't be able to find me. We never even discussed where the next destination will be"
"You don't have to" Aren tried his best to give her a smile, "Go to what is the number one place on your bucket list"
"What?" Ava shook her head, "That's crazy, why would I go there?"
"Because that's where I'll find out" Aren said, "You've been talking about it for as long as I can remember"
Ava blinked back tears as she realized that this might be goodbye, "I hope you come and find me but if you don't… that destination is where I will make my final stand"
"I wouldn't expect anything more from you" Aren answered honestly, "You're always the impulsive twin"
Ava smiled, "I love you, Aren"
She reached out and hugged onto her brother in a beartight hug, turning slightly and kissing his cheek as they broke apart. They stared at each other for a minute before Ava turned and ran the other direction, Aren giving her a head start before she could even hear a sonic boom roar behind her, shaking Ava to the core. Despite having a heavy heart leaving her family, she ran to the nearest transportation to go to the one place on her bucket list; New Orleans, Louisiana.
