From the day I turned ten, I was alone. My brother had died, my father had left years ago and my mother could not afford to take care me. Thinking that she was doing the best for me, she sent me to an orphanage in London with the promise that she would write to me and visit me. She never did.
I suppose it wouldn't have been her fault. Who knows what could have happened to her in the five years I was at the orphanage.
No matter, it is all in the past now and I will not need to think about it anymore. I have been adopted by a rich family. The Steiners. It seems strange that they are adopting me at the age of 15 but they are kind people.
I was waiting in the front room at the orphanage with my one bag and a big envelope full of cards and letters from all the other children. I was excited about leaving the orphanage but I really was going to miss everyone.
I sat up when I heard the doorbell ring. I listened carefully and could just make out the quiet murmurs of Mr Steiner and Ms Rose, a woman who helped out at the orphanage. Mr Steiner walked into the room with a big smile on his face.
'Hello Liesel,' he smiled.
'Hello Mr Steiner,' I murmured.
'Are you ready to leave?'
I nodded. Mr Steiner looked at me concerned. I smiled at him to reassure him. I was happy to go. Just wary. And a little nervous.
'Let's go then,' he said, picking up my bag and leading the way.
I stood up quietly and followed him out the door. I looked down as I walked after him thinking about how my new life would be. Would I become like the rich posh kids I had seen at the corner store. No, I would still be me, just with a better home.
I stopped when I saw his car. I don't know much about cars but I could tell that this one was impressive. Suddenly the reality of it really sunk in. I was leaving the orphanage. It had been my home for the last five years.
I got into the back of the car and as we drove away, I looked back and said a last silent goodbye.
