Jessie
The phone rang sharp and solemn at 5 A.M, one lonely winter night in the Quest compound. Johnny reached out and picked up the receiver of the phone beside his bed. He was still half asleep, until her voice snapped him awake. It was both such a distant memory and so utterly close and familiar.
"Hi Johnny, I'm in Vegas." She said
For a moment he was alarmed, thinking that something terrible must have happened to warrant her calling at such an hour. She said something he couldn't quite make out. So he asked her to repeat it.
"Argh these damn phone booths... I said I'm tired of it all."
Of course you are, Johnny thought with a hint of anger. It was so typical of Jessie the great roamer, adventure loving free spirit. What had been so wonderful when they were younger had over the years become almost a farce. Whilst the others had settled down Jessie was still roaming, moving on at the drop of a hat. She'd had three addresses in as many months.
"I've been thinking 'bout a trailer by the sea. We could go to Mexico... you, the dog and me. We'll drink tequila and look for sea shells. Now, doesn't that sound sweet?" She continued.
Johnny rolled his eyes.
"Oh, Jessie, you always do this every time I get back on my feet."
Jessie paint your pictures 'bout how it's gonna be.
By now I should know better, your dreams are never free.
But tell me all about our little trailer by the sea;
Jessie you can always sell any dream to me.
Oh, Jessie, you can always sell any dream to me.
She makes a little 'hmm' sound, which he had learnt is the equivalent of 'no comment'. Then asked how the dog had been. He looked over at the sleeping mound of fur at the foot of the bed, before answering.
"Oh Bandit, he's just fine. But he used to think about you all the time."
"Yeah" She says "I missed him too, both of you."
'Not enough to come back though' he thought, but didn't say.
"Hey we finally took your pictures off the wall." Was what he did say, almost out of spite. Then he sighed.
"Sorry Jess, it's just well, you really pick your moments..."
He doesn't go into detail, she knows from all the other times.
"Get your stuff together. Bring Bandit and drive real fast." She says, with the familiar lilt in her voice, picturing a glorious vision of the future.
He listens to her take a breath, as if bracing herself for a tirade from him.
"I swear to God Johnny, this time it's gonna last."
Jessie paint your pictures 'bout how it's gonna be.
By now I should know better, your dreams are never free.
But tell me all about our little trailer by the sea;
Jessie you can always sell any dream to me.
Oh, Jessie, you can always sell any dream to me.
Johnny thought about it for a moment. Imagined them together; that he would love her in the sunshine, lay her down in the warm sand...
"Yeah Jess" He said with a smile "Maybe this time things'll turn out just the way you planned."
Jessie paint your pictures 'bout how it's gonna be.
By now I should know better, your dreams are never free.
But tell me all about our little trailer by the sea;
Jessie you can always sell any dream to me.
Oh, Jessie, you can always sell any dream to me.
