A/N This was a request from my friend Janset many weeks ago.
Disclaimer: I don't own DC/CC.
Every time, everyone would reject me, throw me away and leave me lying on the ground to bleed.
Every time, all the people I actually cared about would either leave me or betray me.
Every time, I would be left alone, never knowing where to stand, where I'm supposed to be.
Except them.
Except him.
Every time I would tease him and he would give me that look. I would glare at him and he would step back.
He would protect me and I would protect him.
The balance between us is unexplainable, and is lost in the wounds of time. But it's still there.

It was a Sunday afternoon, I remember. The winds were blowing (a particular windy day) and the rain was banging against the windows, begging to be let in. I was alone (the Professor was at a friends' and wouldn't be back for awhile) and silent. The silence was heavy, setting in like a thick fog and covering the room.
It was broken when someone rang the doorbell. I thought it was crazy that anyone would dare to venture out in this weather, but I opened the door anyways. Kudo-kun was standing there, holding a green umbrella and looking stern. I let him in, and he greeted me with a nod.
"What can I do for you Kudo-kun?"
"Ran is... giving up."
"..Come again?"
I can feel the warm sensation of hope bubbling inside me, rising like a river, sweeping and swaying.
"She's done waiting for Shinichi, Haibara. She's done waiting for me." He sounds heartbroken, and I weakly attempt to cheer him up.
"It's her time to move on, I guess. You can move on too."
My hope is in vain as he throws his head back. "I can't."
Those words strike through my heart.
He leaves shortly after, abandoning his umbrella. I decide to go and hand it to him, when the weather's cleared. I sit back, wondering if I should be happy or not. I decide not to be, since it would only kill the boy.
The rain stops (a few drops are still spilling, but I don't care) and I carry the umbrella across the street. I find the little tantei sitting on the sofa with a blank look on his face. I tap him, and hand him the umbrella. He doesn't acknowledge me at all.
I do something veryunexpected.
"Do you want to grab a smoothie?"
The words tumble out of my mouth, and I began to blush furiously. He nods, shocked, and heads out of the door. I follow, standing close. I feel his breath on my shoulder, and I glanced at his starling blue eyes.
He seemed more relaxed now, his breathing steady. It was… nice.
He grasped my hand, which caused a blush to leap on my face. He probably did it out of instinct, or maybe it was his way of saying thank you. I wouldn't know.

The days went by, which turned into week and then months. I stopped working on a development for the antidote, which was a decision that he agreed with. We didn't tell anyone though.
We grew closer and closer and I began to feel that he was leaving Ran behind, and starting a new future. That made me happy.
He put me up on my feet
And now I grasp his and do all I can to pull him up again
And he smiles and laughs
And he's left her behind
For me.
A/N Kind of short one-shot. I hope you enjoyed!
