The carnivorous beast only required the point of a single, razor-sharp tooth to rip open the ribcage of the girl. Initially she had cried out, but in mere minutes, those cries turned to whispers, and then whimpers...then nothing. Tai had lunged forward upon seeing her pinned to the ground by that thing's shiny claws, but Matt clamped a hand over his mouth and pulled him back. "You dumbass!" Matt whispered frantically. "If we tried to help we would be strips of meat on the ground just like her. We can't - we can't do anything!" Horrible slurping sounds filled Tai's sensitive ears, and a distinct crack filled the night. Tai slumped down to the floor, beating his fist against it silently.

The monster pulled, pulled- then pulled again, before having its mutated hand emerge with a long done-for heart, still glistening with moisture and thick, mucous-like, crimson red blood. The thing held it up triumphantly, and an onlooker would have thought that it smiled.

The whine of the plane engine shook Tai, waking him. He almost slammed into the seat in front of him. Tai braced against the impact with his forearm, softening the blow.

Sighing, Tai sat up straight. The screen at eye level burned his retinas with an image of a map. It was one of those with a little plane icon that moved in real time.

A barrage of snore erupted from the seat next to him for a couple seconds, then died down. Tai smiled at the sight of a sleeping Sora. His girlfriend had fallen asleep after talking energetically and almost non-stop about where they would go once they landed in France.

She wanted to go because it's the city of love and everything, but I ain't feeling the love right now, he thought to himself.

"Babe wake up, we're almost there."

Sora didn't move.

Tai laughed, then looked to his right to peer out the window, which was unfortunately obscured by mist. He leaned in closer, nose almost touching the cool glass. The moisture suddenly cleared, and Tai could see, to his astonishment, a huge flock of birds and seagulls heading straight for the plane wing. They had seemingly teleported out of nowhere, spiraling frantically away from the right side of the plane. A huge shadowy shape was behind them and looked like it was chasing the flock. Are those...horns? Before Tai could even yell for an attendant or raise any kind of alarm hundreds of the birds collided into the turbine engine. Spluttering for a second, the engine struggled for life, then stopped completely.

The emergency lights flashed.

As if on cue, the entire crowd of plane attendees began to panic. Shouting and splitting shrieks split the air as half of the plane stopped flying. Backpacks and canvas bags fell out of the compartments above, landing on multiple people. The entire plane had tilted 90 degrees in the course of several seconds.

The pilot began to speak and highlighter yellow masks dropped down, but Tai was already passing out.

The last thing he saw before they fell out of the air was the ground of a small island rushing up towards them.
