"What I always look for in a best friend- honesty, kindness, and bravery."

"Really? What I look for in a best friend is someone who's stubborn, opinionated, and makes fun of me."

"Huh? Why?"

"Because it would never get boring being friends with them."

Gengar looked up at the human.

The human looked down at Gengar.

Gengar pulled a disgusted face as the defeated Pokémon sat stubbornly on the ground, its small arms crossed and a somewhat pouty aura hung around the purple creature.

"Come on, I defeated you and now we're partners, can you please just get up and accept it?"

Gengar shook its head and glared distrustfully its new 'master'. The blond haired boy sighed and sat down next to Gengar, ignoring the other's stiffening form and grabbed hold of the shadow/poison Pokémon so it wouldn't scoot away from him. "Look," the boy, affectionately known as Jack by his friends, tried to reason. "We're going to be stuck together from now on. You and me. The least you could do is get up so we can begin training and get to know one another."

Gengar looked at the trainer with huge red eyes and stared at the boy. The Pokémon slowly got up, and Jack grinned in triumph. "Great! Let's-"

The purple creature let out a large raspberry in the blond's face before running as far away as it could. The trainer leaned back, shocked, and watched the Pokémon run away from him, until he returned to his senses.

"Oi! What are you doing! Get back here or I'll-"

"-And that is how I met my Gengar." Finished Jack.

Ash looked at the other trainer in amusement and curiosity. He glanced down as the calmly glaring Pokémon (it seems like bringing up the story had trigged some hatred from the Gengar) from its spot next to Jack, and smiled.

"Well, glad to know that you're much better partners now! Let's battle!"

I don't own Pokémon!

For the Kanto Region Pokémon competition on the Anime/Manga Fanfiction Challenges forum. Run by my darling Javier. Using the Pokémon type 'Poison' which is my prompt. And I wanted Gengar so I present to you Gengar.
