The man with the everlasting grin had his past. It was not a pleasant past, for he had to do things that he did not like. He followed a man he feared and hated. He had to lie to all those around him. He killed for that man, the man with the fake face, the man with the evil goals. He did horrible things for that man. But the worst, for him, was hurting the woman he loved. When he became a captain and took on that shy man of a second, he wished to do some good. But how? Then he noticed that his second had taken a shine to the evil man's own second. That was a way he could do some good, by trying to get the two seconds together. But anything direct would not work. A slight teasing would work.
