Simulations
It started approximately 3 hours, 27 minutes and 12.3 seconds after he left. Brainy had written his first mock program, featuring him and Clark on the Sand Dunes of Craggor 5, fighting off Tonga-Tonga's who had cut off the water supply from the settlers.
Brainy didn't die in that simulation. Neither did Superman. That came later as the world scenarios became less complicated, but the interaction between Superman and Brainy grew. It didn't take many months for Brainy to fall into a pattern of scenarios as follows:
a)He liked being the one praised at the moment of death.
b)They had to be alone as only they could save the universe properly.
c)Sometimes dinner and a movie worked better.
That last one had to stop after Timberwolf and Lightning Lad caught him in simulation 271, dinner at the top of Metropolis tower. They had teased him mercilessly, but he'd just turned his back on them and continued his simulations.
They were important. They would help to make the transition time between Superman's return and their eventual adventures together run smoothly. The dinner one was as equally important and if they'd waited five more minutes Timberwolf and Lightning Lad would have seen the Giant Robots attack.
After all you must be ready for all probable situations.
