The Absence of White

"I like him the best," White said and the others backed down.

"Okay, okay, I didn't know you were that serious," Orange said.

"I'm okay with it, if you two are," Purple followed and the girls pulled from their huddle, turning to smile at Bouncing Boy.

"Well, alright then!" he said, smiling back. He'd been worried that for a second there they were going to choose Superman or some random guy that Orange had seen across the street over him.

It wasn't easy dating a woman with three fairly distinct personalities. Bouncy wasn't sure how the combination worked or who was dominate when they were combined, but Trip always treated him well when she was sharing and Purple and Orange were enthusiastic when they were separated.

It got confusing deciding whether or not he should treat her three sides as separate or just facets of the combined Trip so Bouncy started with three gifts and then slowly narrowed it down to one when they went out. Trip seemed to appreciate the gesture and they started going out more often than not with her combined form, instead of just him and White.

He liked that touch, though in his mind he was hoping that the other two thirds would also warm up to him, but those were thoughts for much later in their relationship, when the world was less imperiled by one massive galactic threat. It was just easier to plan for potential intimacy when it was only your run of the mill Fatal Five attack instead of Imperiex.

Then he remembered and looked down at Duo Damsel. White was gone. Only Purple and Orange were left, running their third stripe as Black instead. They'd been avoiding him, proudly proclaiming themselves Duo Damsel and asking him for space.

He'd complied though that space had seemed to grow as the months passed and he couldn't remember the last time they were alone together for longer than five minutes that wasn't part of a mission. Or the last time that Duo had smiled the way she used to when she was Trip.

"Hey Duo, how about we go see a movie tonight?" Bouncy asked, "I have Scary Monster Thriller 17."

"What, oh hey Bouncy," Duo said, "Oh I'm sorry, I have monitor duty."

"Well, how about one of you come…?"

"Sorry Bouncy, we, it's just…" Duo began, hugging herself slightly, "we don't like being alone right now, I mean, without each other."

"I understand," Bouncy said, "but please remember that I'm here if you want to talk and I'll keep being here."

"Yeah, Bouncy, thanks," Duo said, and leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek, "you're the best."
