"James, no!" I groaned, pressing the button for the elevator doors to close. He rushed forward to stop them from doing so at the last second. He ran his hand through his hair.
"Oh, Lucy...But how could you not want... This?" He said, smiling broadly. I have to admit that smile did melt me a little. It's not that I didn't think James was good looking. Ok, he was REALLY cute. Whatever. He just wasn't my type.
I took a deep breath and smiled softly. "Look, James. It's not that... I just... You're just so... Vain. Self centered. Shallow, even. I want to date a guy with something.. More." His smile bent downwards for a millisecond, then recovered.
"Ah, but you don't know James Diamond like I know James Diamond. Not only can I be sexy, but I'm a great kisser," he said, inching towards me and stopping the elevator.
"SEE! That's EXACTLY what I mean! I just... Say something.. Real for once! Not about how you think you're so amazing or anything like that!"
That frown returned. He turned away from me as I opened the elevator doors.
"Real, you want real. Well, you're right. I haven't been real," he looked me straight in the eyes and said,"Before BTR, before California, before all of this...James Diamond tried to kill himself."
And with that, he stepped out of the elevator and walked away.
Obviously, I couldn't ask James about what happened. So I went to the others.
"Hey, Kendall, Carlos, Logan," I smiled. Kendall stood up and glanced at the others.
"Hey, Lucy. Look, I get if you don't like James. But, just.. Be careful what you say to him," he said, intimidatingly serious. I fidgeted with my guitar case handle.
"Well," I laughed nervously, "isn't someone a bit protective of James."
Still unsmiling, Kendall nodded. "If you knew what happened in Minnesota, you would understand why."
"Then tell me," I whispered.
He shook his head. "It's not my place to tell."
"Hey, Ms. Knight," I smiled sweetly.
"Hello..." she said cautiously. I don't blame her. I mean, with my hair and makeup the way it is, I'm sure she was a little intimidated by my sudden appearance in her apartment. I asked for James and she pointed me to his bedroom.
"James?" I asked at the door. No answer. I opened the door and walked in.
James looked up from.. Wait, is that a book? James was READING?
"What're you reading?"
"Ms. Knight makes me re-read this once in awhile," he shrugged, placing the book on the bed. "Look, right now's not the time.. Could I just.. Be alone for a little while?" His brown eyes pleaded me.
"Look, are you still upset about earlier? Because…" I turned around the book and my voice trailed off. The title read, Getting Back to Life - Recovering from Depression. "Because I..I.."
James looked annoyed and slightly embarrassed, snatching the book from my hands. "Because what?"
"Because I realized that I thought you were shallow because I haven't actually TRIED to get to know you. So, will you give me the chance to get to know the REAL James Diamond?" I smiled, trying to get the book out of my head.
"Whatever," James snorted, "you just wanna know why I attempted suicide. Isn't that right?"
"No! I just...Ok, fine. I do want to know. But I also mean what I said about getting to know you!"
James shook his head. "Look, I don't need you in my personal business. So just mind your own, ok?"
No, James… I thought. I want to help you. I want to help you so much! Why won't you let me in?
