When Lilly came back to the office she went straight back to her desk and sat down. The tears were still drying on her face. She almost never cried over a case. But it was something with George that scared her. He hit her buttons; he knew things about her no one else knew. Not even Stillman or Scotty. Scotty. He'd apologised for the whole thing with Chris. That it came between them. Lilly had to admit that the tensed situation between them had bothered her. Scotty was her best friend. No doubt. She didn't have so many other friends, cause of her job. But she had Scotty. And since his girlfriend died, he hadn't been the same. She hadn't recognized him lately. But the look he'd given her when they left Georges old house, had assured her that he was himself again. Lilly raised her hand and wiped her eyes. It was over now. George was dead, the case was solved. Slowly she packed away the files on her desk and put them back into their boxes.
"Hey Lilly, you okay?" Stillman said and put a hand on her arm. She nodded.
"Yeah, I'm okay"
"Sure?" She nodded again.
"You did a good job Lil" Stillman said before going into his own office. Lilly put on the lid on the boxes and stacked them on the floor.
"Lil, you okay?" Scotty's voice made her turn around.
"I hesitated" was all she said, looking up at him.
"What?"
"When I pointed the gun at George. I hesitated before I fired"
"It's nothing wrong with that, Lil. But are you okay?"
"Yeah, I guess" She badly wanted to talk about this. George had made old memories float back up to the surface and Scotty was the only one she could think of to tell. But still, these last months, she'd had barely recognized him.
"You're a pretty bad liar, Lil" Scotty offered her a small smile. Lilly smiled too.
"Well…maybe"
"So…something wrong?" Lilly looked up at him and saw the genuine concerned look on his face. She collapsed back in her chair and more tears immediately began to form in her eyes. Scotty took seat on the edge of her desk.
"He…knew things about me that…I haven't told anyone. He pushed my buttons and…he scared me. I shouldn't have hesitated" Scotty was still concerned. He knew that Lilly's past still haunted her but seeing her like this made him worried.
"He said things about my childhood and…about my mother. He made me tell him about things that happened, even if he already knew them" She wiped her eyes again but it didn't help, a few silent tears streamed down her cheeks.
"Come here" Scotty said and reached out his hand. Lilly tentatively accepted it and he pulled her up on her feet. Then he enveloped her in his arms. Gratefully, Lilly leaned into him and hugged him back. She had missed him. Missed the support she knew always was there, but the one she'd doubted for a few months.
"Come on, I'll give you a ride home" Scotty said. Lilly slid out of his arms and then they left the office.
