"Daddy can you help me with my homework please?" eight year old Emery asked Harry as she walked into the living room with her homework book to find her father sitting at his laptop. Harry looked up from the screen and smiled at his daughter before pulling a chair closer to him.
"Of course princess come here" he patted the seat and closed the lid of the laptop hiding crime scene photos from her as she climbed onto the chair and opened her book "What do you need to do?"
"Write about the best present we've ever got" Emery replied and looked at Harry expectantly "I don't know what to write about"
"What's your favourite birthday or Christmas present then?" Harry asked and ran one hand over his daughters long blonde hair as she shrugged.
"You and mummy always buy me nice things" she mumbled and Harry smiled at her "So does Auntie Sam and Uncle Leo. I don't want to.." she paused
"Don't want to what princess?" Harry asked and Emery shrugged
"I don't want to make anyone upset by saying that something they didn't buy was the best present I have"
Harry chuckled at this and shook his head, his daughter had received Nikki's hate of disappointing or upsetting people and would always think about other people's feelings before her own.
"Emmy we are not going to get upset if you write about something we didn't buy you" Harry told his daughter who looked up at him and smiled.
"Really?" she asked not daring to believe it
"Of course" Harry replied and leant down to kiss Emery's forehead "Now what are you going to write about?"
"I don't know" Emery muttered and looked at Harry again "Daddy what was the best thing anyone has ever given you?"
Harry didn't have to think long about that answer before he replied to his daughter's question.
"Well mummy gave me some very good gifts over the years" he laughed at his daughters frown as he elaborated "You and your brothers"
"Really?" Emery asked again as she picked up her pencil and asked her father the date which she wrote down after he replied, Harry marvelling at the neatness of her writing and once again wished that his children wouldn't grow up so fast "I think I'll write about Houdini"
Harry chuckled to himself and wondered what the teacher would think when she read that Emery's best present was a tarantula called Houdini that she received for her fifth birthday, one that surprisingly lived up to its namesake. He had to stifle a grin as he thought about what the look on the teacher's face would be like and turned back to Emery's work as she asked him to help her with some spellings.
Out of the four children I think that Emery would be the one to worry about people's feelings the most..just like Nikki. and I thought it would be amusing to give her a spider as a present..they are just not a 'normal' family. XD This little fic wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote it down.
