Chapter One: Riley
Dawn licked Riley's fur flat. The young kitten was nearly a moon old, and was already very energetic and cheerful.
Her mother purred gently. "How do you have so much energy?" She asked. But Dawn didn't seem like her usual self. She seemed rather on edge, and continued quickly glancing out of the den.
Riley leaned against her mother's chest, and yawned loudly, her mouth opening wide for a moment, exposing her sharp fangs already beginning to grow. "I'm tired," She complained.
"I guess that energy won't last forever," Dawn sighed, licking her daughter between the ears, trying her best to hide her anxiety.
Riley snuggled closer to her mother, falling asleep to Dawn's rhythmic purrs.
Morning rose, awakening Dawn and Riley. Dawn picked up her daughter by the scruff of her neck and carried her out of the small den. She padded rather quickly away from the clearing, where Riley was born.
"Mama, where are we going?" The young kitten asked.
Dawn started to run. "Far away from here my dear. Far, far away," She said.
Riley flattened her ears, but said nothing. She knew that some things were better off not known.
Still running, Dawn tightened her grip on Riley as she darted down the hill, going as fast as a rabbit.
What was she trying to get away from? Was she trying to escape something, or someone? Riley was clueless.
Suddenly, Dawn screeched, and Riley flew from her mother's tight hold. She landed hard on the grounded, feeling a shooting pain in her front paw. Riley wailed in pain, and glanced frantically around for her mother.
Her eyesight was blurry, but she managed to see her mother batting at a black cat, who was scratching her. Dawn batted at his face, stunning him for a moment. She took this moment to pick up Riley, and to run.
"Dawn..." Riley whined, her paw aching terribly bad. Her mother didn't answer, but continued to run on which seemed like forever.
Once they stopped running, Dawn collapsed on the ground. Riley was just as worn out as her mother. She prodded her parent's side, letting her know she was still there, and started to suckle milk from her mother.
This calmed Dawn, helping her relax. The young mother softly licked her daughter's fur, pulling Riley in closer. Dawn promised herself to tell innocent Riley the truth one day. One day.
A/N: I know it sucks! Don't judge me, it's my first! I'm still getting a hold of the concept of the storyline. I'll try to get better, I promise. I know, this isn't making a lot of sense, I'm really open to suggestions in making this better! Please criticize me! I'm new at this, and might really need help from a lot of other more experienced authors!
