Valentine's Day was known as Single Awareness Day to Yolei. It turned into the same thing every year for her. She went to school, tried her best to ignore the love being passed around in the form of cheap cards and chocolates, went home, did her homework, watched TV, and went to bed early. It has been years since her last valentine. It was Jiro from her 2nd grade class. She's pretty sure he's moved on by now.
As she prepared for school, she wondered what was wrong with her. She had boobs, nice legs, and she showed them off sometimes. She wasn't skinny—she was healthy, as she'd like to put it. Maybe it wasn't her body. Maybe it was her personality. She did have the tendency to be loud and obnoxious. That had to be it. When you're in your last year of high school, you didn't want it to be remembered by the loudmouthed girl who yelled and followed you around for the final four and a half months.
So, it was a problem on their behalf. She could live with that.
At school—it turned into everything she predicted and she went on cruise mode until it finished. She did get a card from Kari—but that doesn't count. She walked home with Cody and TK, parting ways faster than she ever did. She was tired of hearing of their stupid Valentine's Day. She told them that she wanted to check the mail before she went up. She stopped by the vending machine on the way to pick up a candy bad. It was her gift to herself for this "special" occasion.
When she turned the hallway she stopped short. "Ugh—Hi?"
Ken almost jumped out of his skin and threw his arms behind his back, his face turning red in an instant. "Hi."
"Are you trying to steal my mail?"
"No," he said, shaking his head.
"It looked like that to me."
"No, umm," looking down at the ground, he took a couple of steps closer, extending his arm. In his hand was a red envelope with a sticker heart sealing it shut. "Happy Valentine's Day."
For once in her life, she had nothing to say. She took the card and mumbled her words of thanks. He was already looking at her when she lifted her head. He was smiling, but Yolei could tell from years of experience that it was his eyes that showed his true emotion, and something wasn't right.
"Well, I should go. You probably have a date to get ready for." Ken seemed like he was waiting for her to say something, but Yolei was still in her own little shock. What do you say to someone who just gave you a Valentine's Day Card out of nowhere? He must have given up on waiting, because he was now heading for the exit. "Wait!" she cried.
Ken stopped and looked at her, trying not to let his jaw hang open.
"Do you wanna hang out, or something?" she asked.
"Yeah—Yes—Of course." Ken was falling over his words. When she motioned for him to follow her, he almost fell over his feet, but she didn't see it.
Little did they know that this would be start of greater things.
I plan on continuing this. I guess you can say that this is their "Ken grows a spine and asks her out" fic. So, yeah …. Happy Single Awareness Day!
