This fanfiction was inspired by a certain fanart I saw and I was intrigued by it. (Title of the image: Until the Last Man Stands No More. To the person who drew that pic, I salute you. Hehe. Finally found it: link at my profile)
Here goes!
The silent breeze of the night entered the room through the half opened window. A young lady stares at the horizon as she was reminded by the events that occurred a few weeks ago. It was the Third Bloody Valentine... It started with a simple attack from the Earth Alliance Forces. Everything else just followed. Deaths of millions of people, total annihilation of the land and unending cries of sorrow were seen and heard. It was indeed painful for this young lady but she told herself that she needed to be strong for the remaining people of ORB. She made a resolve to take care of what remains to be the peaceful island nation of the United Emirates of ORB. It was during the war that she witnessed something she won't be able to completely move on from.
The deaths of her friends... She saw them coughing out blood, they were slowly dying and she felt helpless. She was crying, begging for them to hang on to their lives. A soft hand touched her shoulders and hugged her tightly.
"Lacus..." the young lady looked at her friend, who was covered in blood and sweat, also crying after seeing the sight before them.
"Ca...cagalli... They're... gone..." the pink-haired princess hugged Cagalli and kept on sobbing. The blonde-haired girl gave her back the same firm embrace Lacus gave her.
They broke out from their hug and they once again glanced at the pool of blood surrounding them. There lie the bodies of Shinn Asuka, Athrun Zala, Kira Yamato, Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman.
They couldn't accept the fact that these five boys in front of them died protecting the girls that meant the world to them. Yes, aside from Lacus and Cagalli, four other girls survived the nuclear attack launched by those Naturals.
Meyrin and Lunamaria Hawke, Shiho Hahnenfuss and Miriallia Haww approached the two princesses as they cried and saw the corpses of the boys.
"This... can't be happening... Shinn..." Lunamaria covered her moist face with her palms. She couldn't bear looking at her boyfriend.
Shiho and Miriallia remained quiet but they were also crying. They were hugging each other and can't stop the tears from falling.
Meyin, on the other hand, stood alone and went near to the cold bodies of her friends. Tears fell down and then she started sobbing loud as she can't hold her emotions any longer. The girls carried the boys to a nearby shelter and hoped to give them a proper burial.
It was after a few weeks, that the girls were able to move on a bit except for one, all of them living in space. They were currently residing in Aprilius City where the main headquarters of the PLANT Supreme Council is.
Seeing as ORB can no longer be a proper place for living, the young princess of ORB decided to bring the surviving citizens and soldiers to PLANTS. They all agreed, since ORB was literally wiped out from the map. The blonde princess was the only one who couldn't move on. There was something that bothered her and it was what Kira, Athrun and Shinn had left her. She looked farther than her eyes can see and reminisced about the most important men in her life as her eyes were once again filled with tears.
"We're going to be the best Coordinator-Natural twins ever!"
"Someday, we'll get married and have children..."
"Thank you for accepting me and being someone I can cherish forever..."
She turned her head and thought she heard them say these lines but it only made her realize that once something's lost, it can never go back.
