Stream's Fate

The sky was clear with not a cloud in the sky as Stream that Runs through Valleys padded along the rocks, the rest of the hunting party ahead of her. She looked ahead if her again. Stream shook herself to loosen the grip that the plastered mud had on her fur. An annoyed hiss came up from the front as a small hawk flew up from a ridge of rock. Crag held up his tail for the group to stop and padded round to the back of the group to where Stream stood on the rocky path that was carved into the cliff side. "Settle down and concentrate on catching something to bring back to the others. Go off by yourself so that we don't have to worry about our prey being scared off." He spat and stared at her with a piercing gaze. Stream stared at her paws.

"Sorry Crag. I'll go off by myself." Crag nodded and turned back to the rest of the group who were standing by patiently. "Come on." He waved his tail signalling for them to follow and padded off and around a corner and out sight. Stream sighed. "Guess I'm on my own." She followed a track to her left that led upwards to a nest where a couple of small, speckled eggs were just poking out the top. She ran a paw over her ear and started up, crouching low and pressing herself against the cliff wall as she made her way stealthily up the path up to the eagle's nest. When she reached the top she hid behind a rock. The stench of the eagle was whisked towards her by the brisk wind that shifted to and fro in the valley. Stream peeked over the top of the rock and saw the the multi-coloured dark brown, black and brοwn feathers covering a head with a dull yellow beak curving out from it. "Die!" She lept out from behind the rock, claws and fangs bared. She landed on top of the giant eagle's back and dug her claws in to get a grip just before it took off, shaking itself in a effort to get rid of her. "Ahh!" She cried as a sudden shudder from the eagle dislodged one of her claws from the eagle's back. The eagle took a chance as soon as Stream hesitated and completely stopped flying all together, letting itself just fall through the air. Stream froze at the sudden action. The eagle took it's chance and tipped itself upside down. Stream was frozen in shock as her claws were ripped away from the eagle and she was sent, plummeting towards the bottom of the cliff. The realisation of the fact that she wasn't going to survive dawned on her and she panicked but there was nothing that she could do. Just as she disappeared into the darkness she spotted Crag and the rest of the hunting party come back around the corner with a hawk or two and couple of other birds. The shock in their eyes reflected her own. "Stream! No!" Crag yowled desperately but he knew that there was nothing he could do to prevent Stream's fate. He hung his head just before Stream disappeared into the shadows of the valley, never to be seen or heard from again.
