Edward Bloom sat in the principal's office. He was called in for some reason. He didn't know exactly what had happened. Principal Rake came in.
"Hi Edward," he said.
Edward shook his hand.
"Is Will alright," he asked.
Principal Rake was a childhood friend. Now Principal Rake was in charge of a Christan school that Edward's son Will went to.
"Yes well we have a small problem. First of all let me tell you that Will is an excellent child. He is a great student and he is a loving boy. Today however he was playing baseball in gym and he broke the window with the baseball. He swung the bat so high that the ball went through the window."
Edward was impressed.
"That's a great hit," he said.
"It is," Principal Rake replied, "But in the case of destuction there needs to be punishment according to the rules."
Edward sighed.
"But you said it was an accident," he asked.
"It was," Principal Rake said, "But the superintendant insists that there has to be punishment for this."
"For an accident?"
Principal Rake sighed.
"I'm sorry," he said, "We rap knuckles here-"
"Can you punish me instead," Edward asked.
"But you didn't do anything wrong," Princial Rake objected.
"Neither did Will," Edward said, "He didn't break the window on purpose. It was an accident."
Principal Rake sighed.
"Alright," he said getting out the ruler. Edward put his hand on the desk and held it out.
"Dad," Will said, "Why does you hand have a bandage on it."
Edward's knuckles were red so he bandaged his hand up so Will wouldn't know. Edward smiled.
"Got into a little accident," Edward said, "My hand got caught in a door so I had Benne bandage it up for a day or so."
"Oh," Will said, "Okay"
He ran off to play.
"You're hand got caught in a door," Sandra asked, "How did that happen."
Edward lowered his voice so Will couldn't hear and told her the whole story.
"Oh Edward," Sandra said sighing.
"I couldn't let him be punished for an accident," Edward explained, "It was just that... an accident."
"You know," Sandra said, "Just when I think I couldn't be more in love with you you do something like this and I fall even more in love with you then I already am."
