DISCLAIMER: I do not own ANYTHING WHATSOEVER in Angel Beats. This fic is purely fanmade and I have absolutely nothing to do with the anime.
The Red String
The girl awoke from her dream with groggy and tired eyes. She lay in bed, her hands laying palm-down at her sides peacefully. Her long pink hair fell languidly over her body. Everything about this girl was tranquil for the moment. Outside of her room she could hear her mom preparing dinner and outside of her window she could see the sun setting, casting an orange glow and silhouetting every object.
Outside of her house was a baseball diamond. Often she would catch herself staring longingly at the people playing and having a good time but she would always stop herself before her wishes became apparent to her mother. She loved her mother very much and always felt like a burden so she tried her best to be all smiles. In the back of her head always dwelled the constant reminder that she could never do those things, baseball, wrestling, soccer, due to the numbness in her body.
The paralyzed girl's name was Yui.
The gentility of the sleepy moment was shattered, quite literally, and caused the girl to yelp in surprise. Her window lay in shards of sharp, transparent pieces at the floor by her bed, and a worn-out looking baseball rolled to the door of her room. Yui was a little stunned by the moment so she just sat there with wide and questioning pink eyes. She was aware of muffled voices coming from the living room and footsteps nearing her door, but this only made her more nervous. She hadn't made human contact with anyone besides her mother in a while so she felt she wasn't ready, but at the same time, that something had been filled in her heart when the boy with the blue hair stepped in the room.
"Ah, sorry about that," the boy said, his baseball cap in one hand, the other ruffling at the short hair on the back of his head. His eyes showed apology and regret, but also something else, as he had felt the same thing Yui had when he spotted her fragile body and unsure face. Something moved in him but he didn't know quite what.
"I-it's okay." Yui gave him a weak smile. Her heart was fluttering. Though she didn't know it, a light dusting of pink appeared on her cheeks, from both embarrassment and nervousness. Her mom stood in the doorway behind the tall male so she was a little reassured.
"I'm Hideki Hinata. You're Yui, right?" With a sheepish smile, Hinata made his way to Yui, his hand held out in a gesture of a friendly greeting.
How does he know my name? Yui thought to herself, but disregarded it. Mom must've told him. The sight of his hand reaching out in front of her caught her off guard and she stammered. The air of the room held an awkward heaviness but somewhere among that was something else. A feeling of familiarity. With much hesitation, Yui reached up her small, fragile hand to shake Hinata's bigger calloused one. The feeling of her soft skin on Hinata's made his cheeks turn a shade of red. It was obvious he was moved by it.
"Nice to meet you, Hinata."
Aaaaaand that's it. How was it? It probably wasn't that good, I'm not that good at writing, but I just finished Angel Beats this morning (after an all-night marathon with my friend) and I must say it was very moving. I cried many tears over it.
I'm not sure if she's fully paralyzed but I just assumed it was from the waist down.
If people like this fic, I'll write another chapter.
