Meeting - Alistair

"You know, one good thing about the blight is how it brings people together."

Raina could still hear the haughty, angry mage behind her, storming off to talk with the probably unhappy reverent.

"Alistair, right?" she asked, ignoring his comment altogether. She kept her brown eyes on his feet and her tone was hushed and unfocused. Her mind was far, far away.

"That's me," he said cheerfully. "You wouldn't happen to be another mage?"

"A mage?" she mumbled, before glancing up. Her eyes were confused, but her voice was much clearer now. "What mage uses a two-handed sword?"

"Well, you never know," Alistair snickered. "They're odd ones."

"Oh." She wasn't sure how to respond to the happy warrior. She hadn't recovered enough emotion for that yet. "Okay. I, um, Duncan wanted to see you."

"Right, the whole recruiting thing," chuckled Alistair. "Lead the way then…?"

"Raina. Cousland if you prefer." Her tone was unfocused again.

As they strolled toward the main camp, Alistair made small talk.

"So… you know one thing I've noticed?"

"What is that?"

"There have never been many women in the Grey Wardens. Why do you suppose that is?"

"I don't know."

Alistair felt his smile fade before sighing a little. The woman seemed detached and wasn't much for conversation, and kept threading her fingers through her long blond ponytail like she wasn't really paying attention.

He had the feeling it was going to be a long evening.
