Disclaimer: I do not own Maximum Ride, James Patterson does.
The stars were bright that night, there were no sounds but the wind whistling in the air as her wings flapped powerfully carrying her through the cool night sky. The flock was at their new home, the E shaped house with over looking a cliff, it had been rebuilt after everything ended. Maximum Ride could no longer feel the tears rolling down her cheeks silently, they were now dry. It had appeared just a few days ago, her expiration date. She was careful to hide it, she didn't want them to know. They had long lives ahead of them, she had made sure of that. She wiped them clean, all but hers, the deal had been made, she would keep her end of it as the Director did hers.
Two years had pasted since the final days of the school, Itex had finally been brought down. Her back bent gracefully as she peeked her arch letting thoughts slip away. Brown eyes like chocolate slid closed slowly a sigh of content relief slipping from slightly parted lips as she let herself fall to the ground. Her wings tucked in tightly, she snapped them open before she got too close to the rocky floor of the forest clearing.
There wasn't much time left now. Minutes at most, she pushed away her emotions, she would be strong until the end. Landing lightly on the cliff where the hawks now rested in their nests she sighed slowly. Lowering herself down to a sitting position she crossed her legs tucking her hands in her hoodie pocket. Sharp eyes scanned the area, a habit after years of looking and fighting enemies. She hadn't broken out of it yet, now she never would. The night was quiet, as it should be, no signs of life other then the hawks. All was well.
A tiny smile tugged to her lips as she felt it. The organ that pumped blood through her body was stopping. Her body was numb now, her head dropping silently forward. Those fearless eyes that had seen so much closed never to open again. A single tear slid down her cheek and onto her jeans. Yes, all was well her job was done, there was nothing else to do. The flock was safe, they would be just fine without her. She was happy with her life she had after all had the maximum ride. The puffs of air stopped as her breath did, no words slipping from her cold lips as she moved on without a word, without a complaint. Like a silent hero she was gone, her duty finished, no longer needed to fight. Her mind shut down last seconds after her heart had stopped, senses had slipped away and darkness had wrapped it's arms around her form. Goodbye.
