Bodies
A/N: Prose piece, I personally really like this one.
Disclaimer: Not my stuff, all right?
Bodies were everywhere – lying on the grass. The sky was thick with the scent of blood, of death, and of a certain kind of melancholy sorrow. The war had been won, but following victory was despair.
Friends were dead, people she knew, the lover she had once cherished, all gone. Only a pile of bodies left for their pains, nearly unrecognizable. She walked through them through the night, the wispy breeze, so meager and weak. A face she knew stood out every now and then, and along with the others she cried, tears burning a river into her cheeks. They were the survivors, few in number.
The lists were eventually released those of those alive and of those dead or missing. Scanning them, she read the names; Harry alive, Neville, Tonks, Luna, Lupin – the list went on, but the other was far larger. Dead and Missing – Fred, Bill, Cho, Ron, and Draco.
Hands had stopped cold at the last two. Her heart barely pounding anymore. Ron, she knew, but Draco Malfoy. The bad guy turned good, so stereotypical, so trite. Her clichéd romantic dreams, those that haunted her nights. She remembered tossing and turning in the same bed as Ron, their bodies so close together, so nearly intertwined. Until finally, she could hardly stand to look at his red hair, wishing for something slightly more silvery. Something a bit more mysterious, less familiar.
She returned to the place where the battle had ragged - Hogwarts so ironically with its trees almost too tall, its grass almost too green. Needing to find him, them, to apologize, to let go of her dream. Somewhere along the way hope was lost, of loving Draco, of being content with Ron. They were dead now.
She needed to see their faces, even if not whole. She needed to just touch them, reality, the world she had built so carefully; or else go mad, raving into darkness. But, the bodies were gone.
