The Doctor walked into the library, a party hat on his head, a bottle of champagne in one hand, and two crystal glasses in the other.

The room was festively decorated, helium filled balloons of all different colors covered every visible space of the ceiling, streamers of gold and silver were hanging from bookshelves and tables.

The tabletops had food and nibbles of a variety that Donna and he had made earlier to celebrate the New Year.

The Doctor set the bottle and the glasses down next to a plate of chocolate cover biscuits and a pot of tea; that had been made hours ago and now was stark cold.

His eyes roamed over towards the fireplace where Donna sat in one of the overstuffed chairs, keeping warm. She never seemed to get warm enough in the TARDIS, but, she made those comments nonchalantly so the Doctor knew that Donna was as much as home here than the one she had on Earth.

He smiled and walked over towards where Donna sat, the clock on the mantle read that it was five minutes to midnight. They had promised to stay up and greet the New Year together, it had been three years that they had been traveling the stars and time periods.

The Doctor couldn't be happier, and now they were going to observe the passing of another year, hopefully the next one would be filled with happiness and wonder, and of course love.

Despite protests and insisting denial, they could not help themselves.

"Donna, it's almost midnight, you promised to kiss me." The Doctor said as he encircle the chair to look upon a sleeping Donna. The Doctor's smile fell.

"Donna?"

The clock on the mantle struck twelve, the shiny new year was now here, and Donna was sleeping.

He shook his head, and placed a gentle hand on the side of her face; he smoothed back a lock of her fiery hair, he leaned forward and on the last chime of the clock he kissed her tenderly on the forehead.

"Happy New Year, Donna." The Doctor whispered he sat down on the floor, placing his head on her lap. He knew that he was going to catch hell for it later, but at the moment he didn't care. He stared into the fire, watching the flames lap at the wood that was keeping it alive.

The Doctor smiled gently when he felt her hand come up and rest on the top of his head, and he faintly heard her whisper.

"Happy New Year to you too, Doctor."
