He always wondered how one simple word could change so much. Sorry. He had never thought it meant much, and he supposed it never really had to him.
"Sorry," his father would say to his mother when he came back late at night, lipstick on his collar and wearing another woman's scent.
"Sorry," said Daphne Greengrass, her perfect sneer on her perfect face as she turned down his invitation to the Yule Ball.
"Sorry," said the Wizengamot before they sent him off to Azkaban for a year.
But, when he said sorry to Hermione Granger, everything changed. The way her face lit up, the way her eyes shone, changed everything. "I'm so sorry," he repeated.
"I - Thank you, Theo. It means a lot," she answered, smiling ear to ear, and it really did. To a poor, broken, lost boy, it meant everything.
