"So...how do we do this whole normal married couple thing?" Michael asked. He and Sara were curled up in a lawn chair in the backyard of their home in Illinois. The evening sunlight warmed their faces in the cool air as they reclined in the quiet. Mikey was spending the night at his Uncle Lincoln's house, giving the couple some much-needed time to catch up after being separated for the past seven years.
"Who knows. We've never managed to do anything in a normal way so why start now, right?" Sara responded, smiling into his chest. "Let's just play it by ear."
"Fair enough," Michael replied, brushing his lips over her hair. "We'll figure it out together."
"I like the sound of that," Sara said, snuggling deeper into his chest.
"Me too."
After a brief moment of calm silence, Sara spoke again. "I can't believe I let that bastard fool me."
"It's not your fault."
"Like hell, it's not. I let him into mine and Mike's life. He could have hurt our son," Sara said, straightening up a little so she could look Michael in the face.
"Sara, he worked for the CIA for decades. He was professionally trained to go undercover, to manipulate people into trusting him. You couldn't have known."
Sara ran a frustrated hand through her hair. "I thought I was so careful about it. I ran background checks, pulled up medical records. I looked into his family, his friends, anyone I could find. I didn't let him anywhere near Mike for the first few months, not until I was absolutely sure he was just a normal guy. God, he was so good at hiding things."
"You did what you thought was best. You gave our son a father when I couldn't be one."
Sara shrugged and Michael pulled her back into his arms. "And now that I'm here, you won't have to worry any more. Nobody's going to hurt us anymore."
"I love you."
"I love you too. So much. Besides..." Michael grinned. "You're not the only one who married someone...interesting."
Sara laughed. "Ah, yes. The Russian stripper."
"She was Czech," Michael laughed.
"Yes, yes. So, okay, we've been in some pretty interesting marriages."
"Absolutely. And now that we've finally gotten the crazy out of the way, we can just kick back and enjoy our freedom."
"Freedom," Sara repeated, her smile growing. "It seems too good to be true."
"Well," Michael replied. "We've certainly been through enough to deserve it. It's time to enjoy our lives, without the constant fear of being followed or hunted. We can finally do normal things like go to the park with our son and go on vacations."
"Did you have any place in mind?" Sara asked.
"I do, actually." Michael straightened up, carefully keeping one arm around Sara so she wouldn't fall off of his lap. He reached his free hand into his back pocket and pulled out an envelope. Sara reached for it but he pulled his hand away.
"Before I show you, you've got to promise you won't tell Mike. I want to surprise him."
Sara laughed. "Alright, alright! Let me see it." She playfully snatched the envelope from his hand and opened the flap. "Oh my God! He's going to be ecstatic!"
"You think so?" he asked.
She nodded. "Definitely. He's been asking me to go to Disney World for years!"
Michael sighed in relief. "I'm so glad to hear you say that. I wasn't sure he'd be into it. I almost got Hawaii as a backup."
Sara raised her eyebrows. "Hawaii, huh?...You know, on second thought, I think Mike might be a little too old for Disney World..."
Michael grinned. "Is that so?" He tilted her head up and kissed her.
"Mhm. I wouldn't want him to get bored or anything," Sara teased.
"Hmm...then if we went to Hawaii now, where would we go for our anniversary?"
Sara smiled. "I'm sure we'll figure it out."
