It's been awhile since I last wrote something but, this one idea kept at me like a crazy person with a fork. Of course its an AU and I could write more but it matters how it is received. Oh and the AU part is that Simon and River were warned and have been on the run since the offer to go to the Academy... and she's about 19... think that's all...

She felt horrible as the yawning hole that once was her heart ached unbearably. It had been two weeks into her 'new' life and all she could do was think about him. She kept hearing his voice in her mind that sent shivers down her spine. The memory of that sweet kiss that they shared in the darkness of the hallway, the light touch of his hand as he brushed anyway some hair that had fallen in her face.

They had never really talked… He wasn't even her type…yet… Every time she just looked at him, she flooded with life and her heart sung. It was probably some stupid childish crush. Yet…she didn't just love him like a silly schoolgirl would, she understood him…

/I'm just a silly little girl…/

"Mei-mei!... River! You got a letter!" Simon yelled from the yard of the small that they know both lived in.

River sat up quickly and grabbed a tissue from her night table. She tried to dry the tears that had collected on her cheeks during her musings as she jumped up from her bed.

"Mei-mei, hurry up! I've got a job to get to!!" Simon growled from the porch, sounding even angrier than usual.

"I'm coming!" She yelled back to her angry older brother. She straightened her dress, and then ran from her room through the living room and through the creaky door, which crashed behind her.

"You're such a barbarian, River… and where are your shoes?" He said shaking his head in mock shame as he passed her a small envelope made fat by a page too big in an envelope much too small.

"I'm going now… Hope there's a palatable dinner tonight." Simon called back as he walked out of the small yard and down the rutted dirt road of the small town.

"Well, good-bye to you too, you…you boob!" She yelled back to him as she turned the envelope over in her hand. A messy scrawl addressed it to her, but there was no return address.

She wandered from the small fenced yard into the neighbor's larger field next door and found a dry, comfortable patch of grass under a tree. She began to open the letter and a small object fell out of the envelope as she wrestled the page out. The page was smudged with pencil lead, ink, and some kind of oil.

River picked up the trinket that had fallen out of the envelope. It was piece of a small silver heart that had been unevenly broken in half; there was a piece of red leather attached. Her hand curled around the small broken heart as she unfolded the messy page.

'My heart has broken heart since your kiss. Wear this as a token of love.

Live in Serenity'

She looked at the broken piece of heart and knew instantly who sent it, the person she had fallen in love with just at a glance, the mercenary from Serenity: Jayne.

A tear slid down her cheek and onto the note smearing some of the words. /Did this mean that she wasn't just a silly little girl? Did he actually have feelings for her? Was that what this meant?/

Okay, so that's it... tell me what you think
