The wind howled beyond the glass of the windows; the rain began to fall, and all the children of Whammy's Orphanage were told to stay inside. Most, since it was evening, were catching up on their studies or playing in the halls. The commonroom was unusually empty, but for the small white-clad boy playing the piano.

Near. Number one in line to succeed the great detective--L.

He was greatly contrasted to the sleek ebony of the Grand Piano; Ivory and unkempt.

His grey eyes were locked on the ivory and ebony keys. How they balanced one another; Light and Dark--Yin and Yang. His pale fingers played skillfully, putting the emotions he never showed--even seemed to lack at times--into the music.

He sat quietly, one hand resting on the bench beside him, the other hand playing a soft, sweet melody. But the Melody seemed empty--unwhole. It was lacking something--Accompaniment.

Focused on his peice, Near hadn't noticed the blonde enter the large room--His rival, Mello.

Though Near had never really thought of the slightly elder boy as a rival, he was aware that he wasn't on Mello's nice-list at all.

But when they were alone, and Mello had no one to judge him or mock him, he'd often find Mello to be a great companion--An equal.

His eyes shifted as the other male sat almost timidly beside him, listening for a long moment. Baby-blue eyes met Gray, and small, unsure smiles were exchanged before Mello too, began to play--an accompaniment. By itself, unwhole.

Together with the other half--a perfect melody.

Somehow they had always known that they could suceed L together. Neither could do it alone, as they were equals.

Two parts of the same Whole.

Yin and Yang.

A perfect....

Melody.
