He stood alone overlooking the New York City sky, the sky that had once been his grave.
He'd rather stare at what had almost been his deathbed than the sight of Claire dancing with her new boyfriend she had brought with her from California.
His name is easy to remember; it's the place he came from: West.
Peter remembers, in middle school, what he learned about the west in American history. He had learned of pioneers wanting to evade from their troubles in the big cities so they would depart west in search of a more pleasant lifestyle.
Maybe Claire is a pioneer, believing in the myth that this West guy could help her escape from her problems she found in Odessa and New York.
Peter wistfully looks back into the crowded room to see Claire wearing a fading smile. It would only be a matter of time before she, like the pioneers, would realize that the west wasn't always the best escape plan.
Life in the west wasn't ideal, it could be strenuous. It's portrayal as a simplistic life was a far cry from reality. If she thought being with that guy would make her life more simple, she made an error in judgment. West wouldn't be able to help her hide from her problems.
That guy couldn't help her do what she wasn't meant to. Because somethings are just meant to be- no matter how you try to deny, hide, or run.
Peter knew this because he too had tried in vain. He surrendered months ago, he was only waiting now...for her.
The myth of the western frontier died a long time ago in the same way that Claire's myth of West would die because you can't flee from fate.
