What's in a Name?
Harry changes her name when she marries Clara, with unexpected consequences.
Harry Watson wasn't expecting much of anything to happen when she married Clara. Of course, there would always be people who disapproved of two women or two men marrying, but she didn't give a rat's ass what they thought. She'd already conquered the largest obstacle: her parents, who apparently approved of Clara solely because she "tamed" her.
No, she and Clara were just two lesbians out of countless others, there was no reason for anybody to take notice of them.
And this is where Harry was wrong.
As a sign of commitment, they had decided to take each other's names. None of this rot about keeping their maiden names. Clara had protested, claiming that it would be fine if she just took Harry's name. But Harry wouldn't have that. It just wasn't fair, and wasn't the way to start off on an equal footing. And besides, Harry wanted to take her name.
No, Clara would become Clara Watson, and Harry would become Harry Potter.
It all started about a month after their honeymoon. All the paperwork had finally gone through, and Harry was now officially Harry Potter at her business. Not only that, but she'd convinced her boss to let her nametag read "Harry" instead of "Harriet" for a conference.
All was well with the world, and Harry was prancing down the street with a bounce in her step, and was caught completely unaware when an old woman stalked up, smacked her upside the head, and proceeded to tell her off.
"How dare you use our saviour's name like that!"
Harry was understandably confused. "Who, Jesus?"
To which she received another smack and a "Hmph!" before the old biddy waddled off.
Not ten minutes later, a crazed young man in a bathrobe yelled at her for "Exposing herself to muggles."
Harry wasn't sure what a "muddle" was, but she was quite certain she hadn't exposed herself to one. She hadn't done anything like that since university!
The abuse continued in much the same manner over the next few months, becoming more and more violent; especially, for some reason, when abusers figured out that she had no idea what they were talking about. Harry began to turn to alcohol, something she'd given up during her engagement, do dampen its effects.
When Clara finally decided to intervene, the whole story came pouring out.
Clara did not, however, appear to be surprised by any of it.
"Oh, they're just trying to protect the man who protected them. See, I told you you shouldn't take my name; I figured something like this would happen." Seeing Harry's blank look, she plowed on. "Well, I told you about how Harry Potter saved the Wizarding World from Vol...de... I Obliviated you the last time I told you all of this, didn't I?"
"Obliv-ia-what-a?"
Twenty-four hours later, Harry had moved into a cheap flat. Wand-waving and flashing lights she could live with. But memory wiping?
Needless to say, she never told her family why, exactly, she and Clara split.
