This is something of a character sketch of Lirin. It takes place somewhere between the conversation she had with Yaone (I don't remember what book it was in) and when she gets kidnapped-ish by her mother and the crazy doctor.
Lirin wasn't given to long bouts of introspection. As it stood, she was still too young to be properly concerned with such thing. She was capricious, and flighty and bold, but that by no means meant she was stupid. Though, her mother often seem to think otherwise. Lirin didn't think she was anything like her mother. Her skin was the same hue as Kou's, which meant it was a gift from her father. Lirin like to believe she was more like her father than her mother, because that meant she was more like her brother.
She loved Kou, would do anything and everything for him, if only he asked. But no matter how much she wished she could be just like him, there was no denying that she had traits he never would. Despite the fact Lirin adamantly denied having any bits of personality from her mother, there were some things the two shared. Both had a bitter, all-consuming want that ran their lines. Her mothers want was for power, anyone could see that. The woman's infatuation with the great demon she had no right to was primarily because he epitomized power in all its forms. Even the gods acknowledged that, though it may have been a bad thing that they did.
Lirin wanted as well, but her want was not for power. She couldn't care less about power really. What she wanted was affection. She might not have been gifted with deep insight, but she still managed in now and again. No one had to point out how deeply her mother hated her.
At first Lirin have thought it was normal. She hadn't been aware mothers were supposed to love their children. It wasn't until a castle resident, she couldn't remember who exactly, had actually told Lirin about unconditional parental love that girl had realized something was wrong. She still would've been fine with the truth about her mother, if it had stopped at simple hate. But there was something about the woman, something in the very way she breathed around Lirin that screamed of some horrible deceit yet to come. And it frightened her.
That was why Lirin could sometimes be found staring up at the great stone statues that was Kou's mother, wondering what the regal woman had been like. Even with her face frozen in anguish and sorrow she was prettier then the mother Lirin knew. At first Lirin hadn't been able to tell why. But after much thought the girl had come to the conclusion. It was a softness in the woman's features; there was no hint of deceit.
Lirin seriously hoped the woman's curse could be broken, hoped the gods themselves could be defied and the broken family can be whole again, for Kou's sake more than her father's. She had never known her father, but she had known her brother, and all her loyalties lied with him. But even still Lirin wondered; would Kou's mother perhaps love her in the way her own mother could not? Even as she prayed for Kou she wanted for herself. She was her mother's daughter, after all.
So...yup. let me know what you think. I seriously think that Lirin is starved for parental attention (that's why she always hanging out with older parent-like figures) R and R por favor!
