My second crack at NCIS! Apparently my muse only lets me write Ari-related stories. Weird…

When Gibbs walked off the elevator – looking for all the world like the cat who swallowed the canary – and strode purposefully to his desk, his team held their collective breath. Tony looked over to Kate, his eyebrows raised in a silent question she knew he would never ask. Throwing him a look that explained in no uncertain terms how cowardly he was being, she did the honors for him.

"So, how did it go?"

"Fine," Gibbs said in a feral grunt. Kate resisted the urge to roll her eyes – even focused on his computer screen, Gibbs would notice.

"Is he still here?" The thought of Ari Haswari being within 50 feet of her caused a shudder to play through her shoulders, and her hand strayed to the drawer that held her weapon.

"I doubt it."

She stood in one fluid motion and marched over to his desk. Placing her hands on her hips, she fixed him with her best stare. It had no effect, so she clarified, "Come on, Gibbs. What happened?"

"We talked, I shot him, and I left."

Kate saw DiNozzo's jaw drop out of the corner of her eye. "You shot him?" she asked, incredulous. She crossed her arms in an attempt to hide the sudden rocketing of her pulse. "Is he dead?" She wondered what might happen to Gibbs if it were true. The FBI certainly wouldn't be happy – not that she cared what Fornell thought.

"How could he have left the building if I killed him?"

"Good point," was her reply.

Gibbs might have been imagining it, but he thought he saw a small smile of satisfaction cross her face as she headed back to her computer. Unholstering his weapon, he placed it in his drawer, locking it securely. The bullet to the shoulder that he had given Ari didn't make them even.

But it was a start.

So, am I getting better, or worse?

I'm hoping for better…
