"Logan… I'm sorry… I can't. I love you. You know how much I love you. I love the idea of being married to you... but... there are just a lot of things right now in my life that are undecided. And that used to scare me, but now I-I kind of like the idea that...it's just all kind of...wide open. And if I married you, it just wouldn't be."
"So, what? I go to San Francisco, you stay on the east, and we see each other occasionally?"
"Well, we can try long distance. We've done it before."
"You really think that's gonna work?"
"I think it would be hard, but..."
"I don't want to do that, Rory. I don't want to go backwards. If we can't take the next step..."
"What?"
"I mean..."
"Does it have to be all or nothing?"
"Yeah, it does."
"But we could at least try."
"What's the point?"
"So..."
"So... goodbye, Rory."
Those words kept playing through Rory Gilmore's head while she was taking pictures with her family. She excused herself and pulled her cell phone out.
"Logan, I'm coming by. We need to talk."
She drove to his New York apartment after telling her family she would call them. The whole time she was going over what she was going to say. She knocked on the door and he opened.
"Did you come to break my heart some more?" Logan said sadly. She went over and kissed him like she hadn't before.
"Suspended animation. You promised. When you gave me that rocket I knew that I was going to end up your wife. I knew that I would wait for you to accomplish your goals and I knew that you would push for me. Why did you give up so easily?"
"Rory. I want to marry you. Doesn't that count?"
"Yes. It means everything. I just don't have a clue what my future holds."
"Me. When have I ever held you back? When you wanted to quit Yale, who was the ONLY person in your corner that didn't judge you or push you to go back? me. When you were scared of jumping, who told you that you could do it? Me. I'm the ONLY person in your life that has been there for you ten thousand percent. No bars hold. When I want to get married, I don't mean let's go to the courthouse or call the wedding planners today. It mean I want to know at the end of the day that you are going to be my wife."
"I'm scared."
"That is the scariest thing I've ever done. That's also the most painful thing. It felt like I fell off the coast again and again and again. I've never felt this low."
"When you walked, it felt like my world was gone and I was alone."
"Rory, what are you here for? Just to make me relive the pain?"
"No. I want your promise that when I say yes, I'm going to still be able to live out my dreams."
"Wait, did you say yes?"
"Promise me."
Logan grabbed Rory and kissed her with more passion. "I promise to give you the world. I promise that if you can't reach a goal I'll give you a boost so you can."
"Then yes."
