Prison Bound

A/N: For a friend on LJ, who gave the prompt "this place is a prison."

It is with a heavy heart that he waits out the darkest hours of the night, unable to sleep, unable to properly dream. The seconds drag on, the minutes causing him to feel suspendes, immobile though his hands move steadily against the mirror.

His fingers stray from his face, following his gaze to the empty space in the glass that hangs over his shoulder. It should be filled, but not by anyone. By the one who occupies his mind now, at all other hours of the day, of his existence.

Nothing was known to him before this life, before they had accepted him. Until his placement, his post that had been dedicated to her service, there had been no life. He had been nothing.

But she had openly rejected his offers, his touch, his love. Denied based on the standards of the world, not on the basis of the affection he believed she held as well.

She should have been here, standing behind him, offering everything she had to him, just as he had offered up his heart.

In the morning, he knows he will be gone, never to see her again. He has been deemed unfit for duty, released from the oath he'd taken for his people. But never will he be free of her, for she will haunt him, an apparition imprinted upon the glass.

When the dawn comes, every wall will seem to him a prison.
