The Flowing Beat

Prologue: Endless Sleep

The sky above is dark, and the only lights visible are the array of stars dotted over the sky. I am searching for something. Something that can only be seen at night, but darker than the night itself. The thing I am looking for is sleeping peacefully and quietly, hidden away somewhere deep yet fairly noticeable. First I began my search around the many mountains around the world because they looked most likely, and then I searched the rivers and the oceans. They were like mirrors reflecting the beauty of the stars.

Just one more place to look, I thought tiredly. I was beginning to lose confidence in finding my goal, my motivation. I then made my way through a vine infested pathway and when I finally got my way through, and I found a small field fresh with ripe wheat stalks. Tall and ready for harvest, but I stopped my admiring when I recalled that this area was clear of civilization. I began to push aside the wheat and started towards the center of the field. When I came across a small clearing, I gasped. Because in the center of this small clearing was the Nir of Night. I observed it for a few nights before approaching. It just slept soundly, making slow waves of light encircle it with each breath. These slow, calm vibrations made a beat. The beat had the slow rhythm of a heartbeat. I tried to remember some of the information my partner tried beat into my head before I left.

It was sending a message to its opposite. The Nir of Day. Both of them were sending waves of peace to each other all this time, but the waves are always intercepted at the Earth's core. The Earth got its nourishment while they waited for each other's message. I looked at the Dark one with sad eyes, looking at its content patient face. But they can never wake up, I cannot allow it. If they continue to sleep the world will rest in peace, but if they awake chaos will take its toll. If they meet the world would cease to exist. So as I stand in front of my prize, I my job to keep it from ever waking up.

Chapter 1

"Do your studies"

I walked into my office, and I noticed that there was an envelope leaning on my high stack of filled out paperwork. It wasn't there an hour ago… I thought thinking about what I did before I went on my lunch break. I put away the thought and began to open the letter. My eyebrows shot up. The letter would've confused all but me. It was written in our code. The code of the Maltekk. "Mri beesi Nir kah besh (I have Nir, found night)." It said in big bold letters. What was this? Did he really find it? But if he had, that means it's my turn to find the other. I thought carefully.

"Alrighty then," I said aloud, slightly disappointed. Of course I was glad that my working partner had found the Nir of Night, but this was just so unexpected. I'd have to pack and be ready by tomorrow. I set the letter down, and began to pace around the room.

The information I've gotten on the Nir of Day has been quite successful, with the little information I could access. It can only be seen during the day. Its fur is so bright that it can reflect any object like a mirror, the perfect camouflage. What else was there…? I stopped my passing for a moment to reflect back on my research. The color of its iris is unknown. Waking period is unknown. How it got here, unknown. Sighting coordinates, irregular. These creatures are so mysterious it's disturbing. Soon after I had gotten packed I headed out to find the Nir of Day.
