It has been over eight years since Rico Brzenska broke off her engagement with Erwin Smith, who is now known as Commander Erwin Smith. Rico's practical father, Count Brzenska, did not approve of their engagement. He did not dislike Erwin; he just preferred Rico to be with a suitor who can provide sufficient income and a home tucked safely near the Sina Wall. To Count Brzenska, Erwin Smith seemed like a fellow who has his head trapped in the clouds with strong ideals—like with most notable philosophers and rebels throughout history.
Rico's irrational decision came to seize; after having to hear Count Brzenska's lengthy lectures on disapproval and Erwin's big dream quest on exploration. She wanted all of her problems to disappear, but ended with a grave mistake that lead her to having episodes of heart aches and loneliness.
Shortly after the death of Count Brzenska, she joined the one of the trainee squads behind the wall. Through gymnastic training and long activities of fencing, Rico was able to suppress her strongest feelings— joining in a trainee squad served as a distraction. She ended up working as a Squad Leader for Garrison. Sure, she can live a more comfortable life behind her belated father's estate, but she preferred to hear about Commander Erwin without having to interact with him. It was the only way she can feel close to him from a distance.
