The Great Cookie Adventure

Three year old Kessalta looked thoughtfully at the cookie jar high on the counter above her. Growing bored with the baby gurgles of her little brother, who never did anything, she had decided to explore the kitchen. Normally the cookies were kept in a big cabinet that only adults could reach, but today they had carelessly been left sitting out. Now if only she could reach it! She had tried climbing the cabinets more than once and had gotten spanked for it. Maybe she could jump. Bending her knees, she jumped three times as far as her small legs could push her. On the last jump, she stumbled and fell backwards. Furious, Kess stamped her foot. It wasn't fair!

The cookie jar flew off the counter and crashed on the floor. Kess glanced around her anxiously; her mommy and daddy got angry when she broke things. Mommy would spank her, she was sure of it. Maybe she could run away now and they would think it fell on its own. Grabbing two cookies, she ran back to her playroom. Little Alex gurgled in delight when he saw his big sister. "Don't tell Mommy," she warned him.

"Don't tell Mommy what?"

Kess turned to see her father standing in the doorway. "Daddy, it just fell," she immediately protested. He noticed the cookies held tightly in her hand. "Kess, Mommy and Daddy told you not to climb the cabinets," he warned her.

"Didn't, Daddy, honest. The cookies fell!" She looked up at him with tear-filled eyes. Doing his best to fight back a smile, he picked her up and carried her into the kitchen. The cookie jar was, in fact, lying on the ground. "Did you push them off?"

"No. The cookies came to me."

Mordion could usually tell when his daughter was fibbing, but he was still curious as to how the cookies had fallen off when they had been pushed back against the wall. He took the cookies out of her hand and threw them in the waste disposal unit. Sitting her in her chair, he bent down to clean up the mess. A very definite look of annoyance crossed the three year old's face. Two more cookies flew off the floor and landed on the table. She stuffed one in her mouth before her father could take them away again. She smiled innocently at him. "The cookies came to me!"

"She did what," Vierran demanded later on.

"When I sat her down in the chair, two of the cookies flew into her hands. She's a telekinetic."

Vierran closed her eyes and leaned against the wall. "She is going to be so much trouble if she learns to get the hang of that."

Without warning, Kess appeared in her father's arms. "Found you, Daddy, found you!" She bounced up and down excitedly, nearly pulling herself free from his grasp.

"Yes, you did find me."

Kess looked uncertainly from one parent to another. "I'm a good girl."

"Yes, you are a good girl. But right now you need to go to sleep."

"Read me a story," she begged.

"You already had two stories," Vierran interrupted, well versed in her daughter's attempts to avoid bedtime. "It's time for bed."

"One more, please?"

Mordion carried his daughter back to her bed, ignoring her protests. Once she was safely tucked in bed, he returned to his own room. Kess listened intently until she heard her parents' door open and shut. Grinning mischievously, she pictured a cookie in her mind. This time she got peanut butter instead of chocolate chip. This new trick was so much fun. She fell asleep while telling her teddy bear about the great cookie adventure.
