She promised, didn't she? She promised we would be friends forever, always helping each other, always being there for one another.

But she broke her promise, my only friend broke her promise, and with it breaking my heart. I loved her so dearly. She was the only thing I had. And she left me. I'm alone. Utterly alone.

My name is Mosspaw and I am alone, my whole life I have been alone, my family would ignore me and tease me, my Clanmates would rarely even look at me. But, there was one friend who changed everything, her name was Dawnpaw, she was my best friend, but she broke her promise and she can no longer be my friend.

I am alone and Clanless now, I never got my warrior name, and I don't care, I am free of the Clans and Dawnpaw, forever.

But I still remember when we were only kits, and she made her promise.

"Hey, Dawnkit, do you like me?"

"Huh? Oh, sure. Why do you ask?

"Well, it's just that nobody else likes me."

"Really?"

"Yeah, and no one will ever be my friend, they all hate me."

"Don't say that, Mosskit!"

"But it's true! No one ever will even care what happens to me!"

"I'll be your friend."

"Really?"

"Yes, we'll be friends forever."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

That was all a lie! She didn't mean it! And I bet she didn't mean anything after it either!

"We're apprentices now,Dawnpaw."

"I know, I never thought this day would come."

"Yeah, but we made it together, as friends."

"Friends forever."

"Always together."

"Always there."

"I'll never let you go."

More lies! She never cared about me! And yet, why do I miss her?

"Hey, Mosspaw! What's up?"

"Oh, I was just hunting."

"Did you meet the new apprentice?'

"Who? Nightpaw? He's cool, I guess."

"Well, he hardly pays any attention to anyone."

"Oh. . ."

"But that's okay, because we still have each other."

"Yeah, we don't anyone else!"

"You'll always be my best friend. . ."

I remember those starry nights where we'd stay up for hours.

"Dawnpaw? Are you awake?"

"Of course I am."

"Oh. . ."

"You know you're my only friend, right?"

"I know, you're my only friend too."

"Why doesn't anyone else like us?"

"It doesn't matter, we have each other."

"Can we never, ever, be apart?"

"We'll always be together."

"Yeah. . ."

And she lied to me. .

"Dawnpaw, why are you always with Nightpaw? He never even notices you."

"Why should you care?"

"Because we're best friends."

"Oh, yeah."

"Why do you act so strange around me now?"

"I do not!"

"Okay. . ."

"Hey, it'll be fine, we'll always be friends."

And she spent more time with Nightpaw and less time with me, even though all Nightpaw did was ignore her and tease her.

"Dawnpaw?"

"Huh?"

"Do you wanna go outside?"

"Ugh, Mosspaw. Why now? Everyone else is asleep."

"But we're not like everyone else, we're friends."

". . ."

"We are friends, right?"

"I guess. . ."

"Best friends?"

"Sure."

". . ."

"Now go back to sleep, Mosspaw."

We only grew farther and farther apart after that.

"Hey, Dawnpaw!"

"Ugh, what is it?"

"Do you wanna play?"

"No, I was going hunting."

"You're no fun anymore!"

"Okay."

"We're still friends, right?"

"I don't think so, I'm training to be a warrior and warriors don't have friends."

". . ."

I am now old but I never forgot Dawnpaw, she was the only one who even cared for me, the only one who payed any attention to me, the one who was always there for me, she made me not feel so alone, I needed her, and she didn't care.

But she was my only friend.

". . .Mosspaw, I never forgot you either. . ."
