He reeled with the sudden shock as his heart was stabbed. He clutched at his chest as pain, unfamiliar for many centuries, flooded through his body. Weakened and stunned, he lost his balance and pitched over the rail of the Flying Dutchman into the roaring maelstrom. Spinning and tumbling, he was drawn spiraling downward into deeper waters than he'd ever encountered. After countless long years of being unable to die even when he wished he could, he no longer feared death. He welcomed it, and was curious to see what awaited him. All around him was blackness, but the roaring and bubbling of the water drowned out all his thoughts…

…suddenly all was still. As his eyes adjusted to the dim light, he felt something bump his body. Instinctively he reached with his claw arm to seize the object, but the claw would not respond. He could move the arm, but he could not control his claw at all. Something bumped him again, and then again. He became dimly aware that he was surrounded by dozens of bodies, all crowding together in one place, shifting positions as if to get a better look at something. He bumped forward, blindly shoving the others aside until he could observe the scene. He could barely make out the vague shapes of people standing nearby. A child ran up close, caught a glimpse of him and ran away crying. He laughed to himself, "Silly git! Ye're right to be afraid!" He was pleased to hear that his Scottish brogue had followed him into death.

He heard words, slightly garbled through the water. "…that big one." Suddenly he felt himself being lifted. He struggled and fought, but could not free himself from that which held him. "The Kraken's dead" he thought, "What's got me?" He could not breathe; he was in air instead of water. Suddenly brighter light surrounded him. Confusion made his thoughts race. Abruptly he felt heat, scalding heat, and intense, searing agony that made the pain of his stabbed heart feel like no more than a splinter in a finger by comparison. He screamed and screamed again, then everything went black. The roaring and bubbling of the water drowned out all his thoughts…

…suddenly all was still. Something bumped into him. Instinctively he reached out with his claw, but he could not open it. His vision cleared a little more. He turned to one side, and came face to face with a huge lobster. Recoiling, he turned to get away, and swam right into another lobster, almost as big as the first. Spidery legs crossed his line of vision as yet another swam above him. Words drifted through the water "The biggest one in there". He felt something seize his body from behind, and once again he was lifted. Before the sous chef could carry him away, he heard a woman's voice say "I simply adore lobster with drawn butter! It's just heavenly!" He began to scream before he reached the kitchen, and did not stop when he was plunged into the boiling pot. He screamed until everything went black, but the roaring and bubbling sounds of the water continued…

…suddenly all was still, until something bumped into him.
