''Magical Girl Genre''
Author's Note:
I do not own Harry Potter, or any of the characters therein. In this version, Hermione is transgender, and Draco will be a bit out of character, along with Ron. However, I hope the story is still enjoyable despite these changes, and that people don't question things too much. The story will also be a wee bit non-canon with events, but nothing that doesn't make sense or doesn't further the plot. According to sources online, Hermione returned to Hogwarts in 1998 to complete her seventh year, therefore finishing her NEWTs in 1999; I'm imagining that Malfoy also returned to the school, with support from Narcissa, to also finish his schooling without the imposed judgement of Lucius.
Before anyone questions my qualifications to write about LGBT, I am transgender myself, and I felt that this character pairing could be interesting if I wrote Hermione as a trans character. After all, we see gay reimaginings all the time, so why not trans? I may well write a story at some point with Draco born as a girl and describing her journey through school (not as a trans character, just a general 'what-if' gender swap). Anyway, that's enough from me, I hope you enjoy this story!
*I realise Luna isn't in Gryffindor, but I imagine post-war, for a year or two, dormitory and common room access rules may have been relaxed for students to stay with people they felt safe around, hence her ability to access the Gryffindor common room with Ginny and Hermione.

First Year

''Griffindor!''
The sorting hat had dutifully done its job, and now, Hermione Jean Granger (Her parents had insisted on her middle name, as it was her intended birth name) was fully enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was a truly breath-taking step towards becoming her true self. She'd always known, in that typical cliché realisation for young people, that she was 'different' to others her own age.
This was painfully obvious during her attendance at Muggle schools. Forced to attend in trousers, and a tie, Hermione was outwardly uncomfortable with herself. The shapes, the colours, the fit of the uniform. It just was not her. Nor was she one for P.E., or rough playing games in the playground. She had always preferred to read, and to play with animals than to be involved in physical games, such as football, or rugby or, later in her academic career, Qudditch. Indeed, Hermione was most unlike other young people.
Harry and Ron had discovered this early on. Whilst they were changing for the induction ceremonial feast on the train for first year, Hermione had insisted she change in the toilet at the end of the coach. Ron, in his infinite idiocy, had managed to somehow undo the lock on the door, and discovered a half-dressed Hermione, changing from her Muggle clothes to the school robes. Hermione had been wearing boxers and a bra, and, with no legitimate explanation (after all, claims that '''boxers are just more comfortable!'' can only carry you so far), she regaled the boys with the tale of her gender identity discovery once they were in the safety of Griffindor common room.
Reassuringly, both Harry and Ron took it rather well, and confirmed they hadn't- and wouldn't- treat as anything other than the girl she already was. It was more than she could've asked for- acceptance, and two new friends. She swore the boys to secrecy, of course, for the remainder of their tenure at Hogwarts. It just wouldn't do to have such a delicate topic bandied about the school halls. Besides which, who knows how the Wizarding community would view her. She was already a Mudblood to certain Pureblood families; why put another bullet in the chamber of your own accord?
Nevertheless, Hermione managed to exceed all expectations, and maintained her secret throughout school.
