Hopefully this is going to be a longer story. Of course it's going to be McGibbs.
NAVAL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE SERVICE
Tony stepped into the quiet house he had been to over a thousand times in his ten years on Gibbs' team. It was probably more then that but a thousand sounded like a good number. He knew all the spots in the floor to avoid so as to not make so much noise. He knew what was in every cupboard in the kitchen - which wasn't saying much in the way of food - and he knew where his boss would be every time he showed up. Reaching the basement stairs, he wasn't surprised to see the light on below, or hear his boss sanding away on whatever boat number he was currently working on. He didn't care about being loud coming down the stairs into the basement, he knew Gibbs already knew he was there. The man had super hearing after all.
Jumping the last two steps at the bottom Tony sat down on said steps and looked up at his boss. Gibbs was of course sanding away on the boat at the other end of the basement, having not even looked up as Tony entered. Tony just sat there watching his boss for a few minutes, trying to decide exactly what to say to start the conversation they needed to have. He knew Gibbs would start getting impatient if he didn't start talking soon so finally deciding, Tony looked back at his boss.
"When are you gonna finally take Tim like you want too?"
Gibbs' hands froze for a second before he continued his sanding. "It's not that simple."
"Oh come on Boss, isn't it?" Tony stood from the step and walked closer, leaning back against the workbench, arms crossed over his chest. "For years I've watched you not so covertly watch him when you think nobody's watching you. The way you lean closer to him when looking over his shoulder at something on his computer. Your hand twitches to touch his shoulder or neck. The way you're more gentler when head slapping him compared to me." Tony watched as Gibbs sat the sander down and was leaning against the boat now. Tony knew he had his boss and smiled, adding one more example. "The way you cover your smile behind your coffee when he's happily babbling about technology you don't understand."
"Okay I get it DiNozzo."
"Do you?"
"I don't have a great track record."
"And neither does he." Tony shrugged. "Doesn't mean it won't work. Plus he's not a redhead, maybe that's your problem right there."
Gibbs snorted as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "DiNozzo."
"If it's the age difference I don't think McGee will care, and you shouldn't either. Just take a chance Gibbs, you both deserve to be happy." Tony dropped his arms to his sides. "Nobody can replace Shannon, and god knows you've tried many times to at least find that same kind of love. McGee could be that chance." Tony stood and headed for the stairs, not stopping until he was at the top. "See you Monday, Boss."
Gibbs stood in his basement thinking about everything Tony had said. It really wasn't as simple as DiNozzo was saying, but he knew his senior field agent had really called him out. Gibbs had been slowly falling in love with his youngest agent since day one of meeting him. It wasn't like a punch to the gut and it took him a few years to actually realize exactly what it was, but now it was too late. He held McGee at arms length because of it. The age difference was part of it, another part was the fact he was the kids boss, he worked for Gibbs. Some people might get the wrong idea and as much as he could care less and deal with it, McGee shouldn't have too. He knew McGee was going to go far in the agency, maybe even be running it someday. Gibbs really wanted to be there with him when that happened.
It was Friday night and the team had a rare weekend off, not even on call. Something about working too many hours in the last six months. Saturday night found Gibbs half way to McGee's apartment in Silver Spring before turning around. Sunday was the same thing, but this time he found himself actually standing at McGee's door, ready to knock. And then he was heading back home to his basement without even knocking.
Monday morning brought the team back to work and it was't long before they had a case keeping them busy. Gibbs watched McGee, knowing DiNozzo was watching him. McGee seemed oblivious to the attention and Ziva was watching all three, trying to figure out what was going on. By Wednesday, Tony was getting frustrated with Gibbs and McGee. He needed to find a better way to get the two of them together and decided to recruit Abby to help. They had talked before about their two favorite men, it was what original took Tony to Gibbs' home to talk with him that Friday night. When Tony entered the forensics lab, it was to find McGee also down there, sitting on a chair and slowly spinning around. McGee was staring at the ceiling and mid-sentence when Tony stepped closer.
"...and he didn't knock."
"Who didn't knock?" Tony asked as he stepped up to the desk next to McGee.
Tim looked at Tony and smiled. "Abby just told me you went to talk with Gibbs Friday."
Tony shrugged. "Neither of you are making a move, someone had to push one of you."
"He showed up at my apartment Sunday night."
Tony smiled, maybe he was wrong and the two were just being discreet while at work? "So he actually listened to me!"
"No." Tim shook his head. "He got to my door and I waited..."
"But he never knocked." Tony huffed, repeating what he had heard McGee saying when he had entered the lab.
"Nope." Tim spun in the chair again. "By the time I finally decided to answer the door and act surprised, he was gone."
"At least he made it there." Abby turned to look at them both. "It means he wants you, like really wants you."
"Maybe you should talk to him this time." Tony pushed Tim in the shoulder, causing him to spin once again.
"Yeah, maybe I should." Tim stopped spinning and stood, heading for the door.
"Where are you going?" Abby yelled after him.
Tim just waved a hand back at them as he left the lab. Tony ran to catch up to him, Abby right behind him. They turned from the lab door just as they saw Tim pushing Gibbs back into the elevators and the doors close.
"How did he knew Gibbs was heading down here?"
"I don't think he did. I think he was heading up to the bullpen and Gibbs just happened to be getting off the elevator instead."
"You think McGee will actually do something?"
"Instead of wondering, we can watch!" Abby grabbed his hand and rushed back into the lab.
"They're in the elevator Abby, how are..." Tony shut his mouth as he watched Abby pull up a live camera from the elevator, both Gibbs and McGee coming into view, both seeming to be talking.
"That's not a security camera."
"No it is not."
Tony smirked. "Nice."
"I know."
