This Slayer's Life
Chapter 1...
"Roswel Stuart, you've got five minutes!" Dawn yelled up to her fifteen year old daughter who had overslept (again). The top half of her body sprang up off her pillow. Her eyes were wide, and the only thought going through her mind was, "Oh, God! I'm dead!"
Ros's graceful figure leapt out of bed with her long brown hair rippling in the wind. She threw on a pair of pants and a T-shirt, grabbed her shoes and trapper, and ran down the stairs.
Dawn is 26 years old, and is married to William Stuart. William is 27 years old, and has a very successful career as a veterinary assistant. His shift is from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day.
"Whoa!" Ros yelled as she ran into her mother at the bottom of the stairs. Her trapper fell open, and papers went flying. Dawn tried to help her pick them up but Ros stopped her. "I have a choice right now between A's and life. I choose life." Ros explained. She shoved a pop tart into the toaster, and ran upstairs to brush her teeth and hair.
Less than a minute later she jumped from the last four steps, grabbed a plate from the cupboard, and caught the pop tart in mid-air. Dawn pulled out a chair for her daughter. "Uhuh. No time to sit," Ros mumbled with a huge bite of chocolate pastry in her mouth (And need I mention crumbs going all over the place).
"Do you know what they'll do to you if you're late again?" Dawn asked her daughter. "Unfortunately yes. That's why I found that short cut. Besides, you know how fast I can go on my skateboard." Ros reassured. "I wish I didn't. I'm glad you wear your helmet." Dawn said with a look of relief on her face.
Ros sheepishly said, "Yeah... my helmet... Well..." Dawn's expression changed to annoyed. "You don't wear your helmet," she said with a piercing glare. "I used to, but when I was putting it on a couple of weeks ago, a Vamp came by and grabbed it out of my hands." Dawn didn't seem convinced.
"He really did! I tried to chase him and get it back, but he got away." Ros's expression was honest, so Dawn believed her.
"Okay. We'll buy another this afternoon, but no skating until you have another helmet."
"Except under extreme circumstances?" Ros asked expecting to be turned down.
"No. Not unless your being hunted by a vampire that wants you for lunch, but since you won't be leaving the house that shouldn't be a problem."
"So I'm staying home from school?" Ros sounded hopeful.
"If you're late again they'll kill you. So you will fake being sick. And no screwing up. Make it look convincing when you go back." At this, Ros headed for the door to go to the park.
"No way missy. If you're supposed to be sick, you can't be seen out of the house. Upstairs to your room now, and keep the blinds shut so no one can see through. You'll have to hide there." Dawn laid out the rules for Ros, who slumped so far her knuckles nearly dragged to the floor (figuratively speaking. Your arms aren't that long unless you're a gibbon).
A few hours later Dawn walked into Ros's room, which was filled with the blaring of Linkin Park. She was sitting on her bed playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.
"It's time to go to the store. Put on your shoes. Is there anything else I can add to the list for you?" Dawn asked in a tender motherly tone.
"Um...no. I can't think of anything else. Let me save this game, and I'll be downstairs in a minute." Ros said her fingers flying to save her progress.
"I bet you'll beat me to the bottom." Dawn said turning to leave the room. Ros ran up behind her, and squeezed through the tight space between her mother and the door.
As Ros passed her mom she said, "You were right. I'll beat ya."
TBC.. Hope you liked it so far. This is my first fic, so tell me if it totally sucks. If you do like it, review or I'll drop this story.
