"Why didn't anyone tell me I was late?!"
Katie glared at Lucas even as she zipped up her coveralls and scrambled for her boots. Unfortunately, he was too busy with his reflection to notice. "You're the one who took the job. It's your responsibility," he reminded her as he continued gelling his hair.
"A little help from my friends would still be nice once in awhile," she snapped back as she pushed him from the mirror to the other side of the room effortlessly, ignoring protests of how his hair was now ruined as she raked a hand through her own dark curls, decided it would have to do, and then dashed down the steps.
She was so busy trying to think up an explanation to the park manager about why she was late to pick up the morning litter (and a way to dispose of Lucas's body after the 'accident') that she nearly crashed into her best friend Trip on the way out. "Sorry, but I really gotta go, I'm serious, I don't even have time to get my--"
"Lunch." Trip beamed at her as he handed over the paper sack. "And don't worry, I arranged it so Wes and I can help you in the afternoon."
As grateful as she was, there was only time to thank him with a quick kiss on the cheek and a big smile-- and then she was gone.
If Katie had looked back, she would have seen Trip return her smile... and then it would fade as his face grew sad, maybe even a little wistful.
And then she would have seen him take a breath, go back inside, and continue with his day.
