It was night. A beautiful day had given way to a tranquil evening, which had in turn melted into the kind of darkness that books often described as velvety. The sky was a watercolour mix of violets and blues and black, dusted with stars like a child had taken to the expanse with a bag of silver glitter. Crickets chirped in the grass surrounding the little house—more of a ramshackle cottage than anything, really— and fireflies traced lazy patterns in the air above them.
In short, it was the perfect setting for a confession.
"I," Yato managed to get out, before gulping and looking away with a furious blush on his cheeks. "I, uh, I'm—"
Hiyori's eyes flicked to his face, then flicked away just as fast.
"I've thought for a long time about how I should say this," Yato tried again, still determinedly not looking at Hiyori, "and I—I'm not great with long speeches, I'm not a poet of any sort, and I know I trip over my words a lot and I haven't got much to offer—"
"Yato," Hiyori said quietly, also not looking at him, because he was treading dangerous territory here and she didn't want to hear it—
"— but I've gotta say it now, because I feel like if I don't get it out now I'll never get it out—"
"Yato, I—" Hiyori tried interjecting again, but Yato ignored her and steamrollered on. Hiyori bit back her protests and just forced herself to listen despite all the instincts screaming at her that he needs to stop right now, because maybe he'll come to his senses and stop on his own—
"—and I just want to let you know how much you mean to me, just—god damn it, you've changed my life, okay, and maybe you think this is too sudden or too much or whatever, but—"
"Yato, please—" Hiyori tried one last time, hoping she could settle this before it went too far—
"—I think I'm in love with you, okay, and I'm terrified—"
"Yato!" Hiyori's voice cut through his impassioned speech like a cutlass, cold as polished glass, but Yato was having none of it.
"NO, HIYORI, I'VE GOT TO DO THIS! IT'S NOW OR NEVER! I love you, I love you, I love you, and I can only hope you return my feelings—"
Too far. Something in Hiyori snapped, and the next thing Yato was aware of, he was flat on his back on the floor, Hiyori's slipper-clad foot pushing down forcefully on his chest.
"Now," she said, deadly calm, "are you going to stop talking to that capyper plushie and help me with the dishes, or do I need to eviscerate you and hand you over to Yukine?"
Yato couldn't have dropped the capyper plushie in his hands any faster if he'd tried.
In case it's not 100% clear what was happening… yes, yato was confessing to a capyper plushie to avoid helping hiyori with the dishes
