Author's Note:

Howdy! This is my first ever fanfic. I've been a fanfic reader for a number of months now, and I've decided to join the fray! This is just a little one-shot, set in Victory of the Daleks, you'll know what scene when you read it. So, please enjoy, please review if you've got the time.

Oh, and never forget

Bowties are cool!

EDIT (04/11/11): This is not an update, just a minor edit.

Choose, Doctor.

If you had to choose between destroying your worst enemy and saving your greatest friend, what would you choose?

For this was the terrible choice the Doctor faced that day onboard the last ship of the Daleks. On that horrible day, when the creature the Doctor thought was gone forever was reborn, the last Time Lord faced this dilemma.

On the one hand, there was the Daleks. One of the worst beings in the universe. The Doctor could let the Spitfire destroy the Dalek ship, and they would be gone forever. He thought of all the lives that could be saved if this was done.

But, on the other hand, there was Earth. Even if he did succeed in wiping out the Daleks, it would come at the price of the destruction of one of his favourite planets, the death of billions, his favourite people gone. For the human race had always been a friend to him, his best friend in many ways.

He looked at the Daleks on his scanner screen. There they were. Taunting him.

"Choose, Doctor," droned the Supreme Dalek, "Choose!"

The Doctor felt a wave of disgust and fury as he gazed at this demonic dustbin. He felt furious. Who did this metal monster think it was, taunting him? He was the last Time Lord, the saviour of the universe, and here was this metal abomination taunting him as if he were some cowardly Tivolian!

As he felt this wave of fury, he considered sacrificing his chance to save Earth, just so he could have the pleasure of watching the one being he truly hated get wiped from the sky forever.

Never again would the Daleks taunt him, never again would they cause misery and terror in the universe.

But if he let them go, if he saved Earth and let them go (for he knew he could not do both, even with a time machine), they would rise again. A new Dalek empire. Who knew what disaster they would cause, if he let them go.

Destroy the Daleks, and he would stop all that.

But Earth would be gone.

He thought of Amy, and what she had said when they were on Starship UK. It was true. He couldn't bear to see children cry. And many, many children would cry if the Earth was shattered. He couldn't let that happen.

And if he did effectively sacrifice the Earth just to finish the Daleks, would he be any better than the Daleks themselves? He had once been told he would make a good Dalek. Wouldn't letting Earth be blasted to atoms simply prove this assertion to be true?

For as much as he hated the Daleks, the Doctor thought, there was one thing he would never do in his battle against them, even if it meant his death.

He would never become like them.

"The Doctor to Danny Boy, the Doctor to Danny Boy. Withdraw."
