The crowd erupted in cheers as Kurt looked around, taking in the noise and bright colors. He noticed a plethora of same sex couples before realizing he, too, was holding someone's hand. Kurt looked up to find a watery eyed Blaine, sporting the widest grin he had ever seen. Without saying a word, Blaine pulled him into his arms. From somewhere in the crowd, music began to play and Blaine grabbed his boyfriend's hand again and twirled him around. Kurt's smile soon matched Blaine's as they danced in the street.
spin you round through the roar of this crowd tonight, tonight
dance you round through the bones of this town until daylight comes
hope, hope will put the colors in the sky
hope, hope will set this world of wrong to right, to right
love comes tumbling down…
….and then Kurt was tumbling down, off the couch and onto the floor, as Blaine jumped up and down yelling "THEY DID IT! THEY DID IT!"
Kurt surveyed the room, noticing his dad also looking happy, although he was eyeing Blaine suspiciously as if he expected him to start climbing on the furniture. Rubbing his elbow where he had landed, Kurt glared up at Blaine, asking "Who did what, Blaine?"
Apparently unaware of Kurt's irritation, Blaine looked down at him with tears in his eyes, saying "The bill. It passed. It passed!"
For the first time since he was awoken so abruptly, Kurt glanced at the television. The numbers 33-27 flashed across the screen, under a picture of the Empire State Building lit up in rainbow colors.
And then Kurt was jumping too, and their words were incomprehensible. "…so many people" "New York City…" "finally…" "everyone can…" "… next year" "we can…." "only if you want to…" "do you want to?" then blushing and hugging and more whispering.
"Hey boys, just because it's legal now doesn't mean you need to rush anything!" proclaimed Burt from his position in the arm chair. Kurt's only response was to let go of his boyfriend and pull his dad into a tight embrace.
"I'm gonna miss you next year, kiddo, but I'm very glad you can now marry whoever you want, whether it's Blaine or some other guy. And you know I'll be right there to support you, even if the damn state of Ohio still won't."
With that, Kurt finally started crying as he gave his dad one last squeeze, before joining Blaine back on the couch, wide awake this time, to watch the celebrations in their future home state.
