Gift Exchange

Diana punched in the code for her quarters tiredly as she ran a hand through her disheveled hair. She'd just finished dealing with an earthquake in India alongside Flash, Black Canary, and Supergirl. All she wanted now was a shower, a change of clothes and sleep, at least until her next shift of monitor duty. Batman would have her head if she was late again. With another sigh, Diana entered her quarters and headed for the bathroom, peeling off her grimy uniform as she went.

When she exited the bathroom some time later, wrapped in a towel, she immediately noticed the black box that was sitting on her bed. Curiosity piqued, she looked around the room and, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, walked over and kneeled on the bed next to it. She ran her fingers over the box's surface and edges, as if looking for some clue as to who it might be from. She already knew who had left it though, and looking for clues was pointless. He never left any traces behind.

Diana paused for a moment to look up at the bookshelf across the room. On the second shelf she'd displayed various gifts he'd given her, ranging from a dagger he'd given her for her birthday to a pair of snowflake earrings she'd gotten from him for Christmas. Each time, she had found an unmarked box, usually black or grey, in her quarters. Suddenly becoming impatient, Diana pried the lid off the box, revealing its contents to her. She pulled out a sterling silver necklace with a small ruby heart dangling from the chain. It was only a small action on his part, but it spoke volumes to her.

Batman was sitting at the monitor duty station, completely absorbed with his work, when the princess walked in. He was immediately aware of her presence, and the small box she was holding in her hands. He had a feeling he knew where this was going.

"Bruce."

He only grunted in response. That didn't deter Diana any, however, and she just continued striding towards him until she was standing next to the chair he was sitting in. She fell silent, watching the various computer screens displayed before them until he spoke. "Why are you here, Diana?"

"I thought I'd return your gift. This one at least." She set the box she'd brought with her next to the computer keyboard, pushed it slightly towards him, and without another word, turned on her heel and left the monitor womb. Bruce's gaze swept over each monitor once more before landing on the small white box sitting to his left. Sighing once, he reached out and pulled the box into his lap. He started at it for a minute, contemplating whether or not to actually open it. Oh, what the heck, he thought. It's just a small Valentine's gift between friends. Right? Right. Hesitantly, he pulled the lid away from the box and lifted out what was inside to examine it. When he saw what he was holding, a smile broke across the Batman's face, a real smile. It was a small stuffed vampire bat. There, sitting alone in the monitor womb, Bruce knew. Faced with the Amazon Princess and her wit, charm, and compassion, he stood no chance.

And now, he wasn't quite sure if he wanted to.

A/N: Sorry this is another incredibly short one-shot, I found myself rushing to put this together at the last moment... again. I have a week off school coming up though, so I should be able to upload stuff then. Happy Valentines Day, and, until next time, bye!
