Vash followed the drops of red into the towns church. 'Oh, please, please don't let it be his blood,' he prayed. 'I couldn't take it if that blood were his.' But up by the altar, held up by his Cross Punisher, knelt the one he had entrusted his heart to.
'If a great wave shall fall

Then between the sand and stone

"Wolfwood!" Vash called out, and ran to the figure. "Wolfy?" he whimpered, holding the man close to him as the Punisher fell forward. No response came from his lips. Vash checked for a pulse, but to no avail. "No," he whispered. "Not when we finally... Wolfwood."

"It was me, wasn't it? You didn't kill him. So he killed you," the gunman sobbed. "Why you?" he asked, holding the man's corpse close as if it were his favorite teddy bear. "Why not me?!? Why haven't /I/ died yet?!? Why everyone around me?!?"
"Because you have to stop him, Vash."

Those words seemed to be what the gunman needed to walk out the door early the next morning.
